  1. If this is to be a frog specific rod, there's really no need to spend a lot. Go with a H or MH with an extra fast tip if you don't need to walk the frog or if you want to walk the frog, I suggest and MH with a fast tip. Since this is a visible and not a feel bite, there's no need to break the bank. I've said it before, the reel is more important in frog slop fishing than the rod. Go with a reel that has the most drag you can get (see abu or lews tourney MG) and a high gear ratio.
  2. Ohh, great tip on the dowel. I use 65 lb braid so this is crucial!
  3. I like to keep it simple. Mono when I want some stretch (poppers, cranks) Braid at all other times. I'm pretty lazy when fishing so I like the fact that braid is easy. If I feel I should, I will use a FC leater but really, I don't think you need to. I do like using heavy braid on my spinning outfits because they don't bite into the spool as often. Yes, braid is expensive but I can use it forever! It's hard to prove a negative. If you fish FC and Braid and can actually somehow get the same exact conditions, then maybe you could prove this. Otherwise, I'm going to stick with a simple setup. Iif you're worried about braid slipping out of your line tie, superglue the gap shut once and you are good to go. Also, leave a tag end on your polymar knot. Oh, that's another great thing about keeping it simple, I don't have to learn and remember a bunch of different knots.
  4. I forgot that I have a Shimano Corvalus 300 CVL that an old boss gave me as a work anniversary gift. What do you guys think about using it as a punch reel? The drag is pretty robust. I don't fish tourneys so holding it for 8 hours straight isn't an issue.
  5. A big ole X2 on this. I have an auto Pfd from cabelas that my wife bought me. I don't even know I have it on anymore. I fish alone a lot and I'm lazy. It's not about you but the folks that want you around.
  6. Ish, Ike, and Jason Quinn.
  7. Just once I wish I had been there yesterday!
  8. Keep the reel keep the woman. Who cares about the rod! I say just use any old rod and wait for that nice gal to buy you one!!! I'm with the others, I never exchange a gift unless it's the wrong size and I make sure I get the same item. The gift is just that, a gift. Someone who cares gave it to you and they didn't need to. You're lucky buddy. Good for you!
  9. I just got a 7 ft H rod at scheels for 40 bucks. I don't walk frogs so I was looking for a broom stick. In my opinion the reel is much more important. Get the most drag you can and a high gear ratio. Revos are always good.
  10. It reminds me of a story my grandfather told me. A guy dies and doesn't know whether he ended up in heaven or hell. He's walking along the shoreline of this pristine lake and he comes upon an angler. He starts watching this dude and on every cast the guy is catching a 10 pound plus hawg! The observer exclaims "I am in heaven!" The angler turns to him and says, "I catch the fish of a lifetime on every cast. This is hell." Ha, I got all Confucius on you!
  11. I do like Randy. He seems like a pretty genuine guy and I know he's heavily involved in charity work. I think he'll do some great things with the exposure.
  12. My vote is to summer in Minnesota and winter in FL. I know there are great lakes down south but when I go to my lake pace, I am 25 minutes away from 30 different lakes that all hold 4-5 pound bass. But the best part is that there isn't any boat traffic on most of the lakes. The hardest decision I have to make is which lake to fish on a given day. I get grumpy if there's one boat on the ramp when I get there! I live on the Eastern edge of North Dakota. Look up the stas on our state. We have a massive budget surplus, we are the number 2 oil producing state, we have very low unemployment and the people here are some down to earth folks. No crazy liberal politics that may hurt the outdoorsman. Yep, I would say spend the summer in MN and the winter in FL if you can afford it.
  13. I"m on here every day from Feb through Oct. In the fall I do take a break to hunt ducks and geese. It is nice to know there are other folks as obsessed as I am.
  14. I'd buy one but only if you have a medium tapered at the waist so I can show off my six pack and a bit roomy in the arms for my massive biceps. OK, if you have a 3XL I would be down.
  15. I usually say this when I start the day fishing: The lord sure paints the prettiest pictures. Then half way through the day without fish I say: Oh lord, please help me here. Then when I get a good bass buttoned up I say: Thank you lord! Then when I'm done and I've stayed out too long I say: Lord, I hope she's in a good mood. All in all I'm pretty sure the almighty is an avid fan of fisher people everywhere.since he is mentioned a lot during the day.
  16. My wife gave me my screen name. I always show her my TW orders and I am always buying more frogs. One day she claimed I was a frog freak. I couldn't really argue (I wouldn't win anyway).
  17. Northwoods of minnesota not quite ready for the spawn here yet. I am severely jealous.
  18. The upside is I am so darn organized. When I get grumpy my wife sends me to my tackle room and I play with all my tackle boxes and reels. Oh and I dislike posts from anyone south of say Missouri!
  19. Man, I just put some braid on a Daiwa and they have holes in the spool. I just ran my braid through the holes so it wouldn't slip. The dude that I bought the reel from (in the flea market) had it set up that way when I took the old line off of it so I didn't have to learn the hard way. I think I've used electric tape in the past to make sure the braid didn't slip but only after reading about it in this forum. Thanks Mega! I grew up using mono so all this braid stuff is fairly new to me.
  20. Congrats!! Ask the hard questions! Like.... Oh I can't think of any.
  21. I started building lures. It's been fun but I'm ready for spring now!!!
  22. I don't eat breakfast. I do my business when the motor is warming up (in the bathroom). On the water I bring natures valley granola bars and coffee. I have a mug that plugs into the lighter deal so it stays warm! I usually take a break around 11 am and my wife makes breakfast burritos.
  23. I hope my wife doesn't see this!
  24. Just curious what you guys think. It's between a quantum accurist, lews speed spool or an Abu orra. My budget is $100. I'll be matching it up w a st.croix MH fast 6'6" rod.
  25. I removed the trebles from my kids lure once. It took him a couple missed fish to realize what was going on. He's 21 now and still talks about it. Don't worry he had caught 12 nice fish that day. Way more than his dad as usual
