Curiosity Question

Recommended Posts

Here is a curiosity question that hit me today while I was fishing. Let's say just (for pure entertainment only) you come across a "bass genie" and he tells you,  you are going to catch the bass of a lifetime on your very next cast, would you take the cast?

98% of me, is leaning towards no. I would not take the cast. The complete element of surprise and suspense of the moment would be taken away from such feat. 2% of me is saying "C'mon its a bass of a lifetime"

Thoughts??

.... you can tell fishing was slow today... lol..

I'm with you, it's not about the fish, it's about the achievement.

I'm afraid I'd have to tell said genie: 'Thanks, but no thanks'.

For me at least, the best part of fishing (the only part)

is the planning & preparation that hopefully leads to success.

In support of that mindset, I've never hired a guide in my life.

I'd try and compromise...maybe he can guarantee me I'll never be skunked? Even that would ruin the fun I'm sure.... How about he'll come unhook any snagged lures?

I would. The complete element of surprise wouldn’t be taken away from me because I would be curious to see exactly what the bass of a lifetime might be. Who knows, it might shatter the world record! Now if I ever had any wish in the world it certainly wouldn’t be for the fish of a lifetime. Although that certainly would be nice, family first! I would make sure they were taken care of before myself!

Exactly, "Bass of a lifetime" has a lot of interpretations.   They're always trying to trick people.  One rule to live by is "Never trust a genie."

Hahaha. Fish of a life time. Could be a merman named bass.... f that.

I would have to pass sounds to risky. Genies always cause trouble.

Maybe the genie is merely letting you know that all your preparation, skill and timing is going to culminate in the bass of a lifetime on that next cast, not that they are influencing the next cast.

The hard part would be if you don't, that means you have to give up fishing or give in and make the next cast but if you do make that cast you know that you will never surpass that fish for the rest of your life.

No cast, Im only 28 I would not want to go the rest of my life knowing I have already caught the one.

Yeah and since my best fish is below the 3 pound mark by estimations (avatar pic, didn't weigh it) then my bass of a lifetime might just barely exceed that. I'd have remember the genie from Aladdin and bargain to wish him free in exchange for something other than that, like better gas mileage from my outboard, or trolling batteries that never run down, or else threaten to sink his lamp with him still prisoner in the deepest part of the lake!

Funny thought. I went with a guide for about six trips out of New York State fishing for smallmouth on the Niagara river, lake O & Lake Erie. I never broke 5lbs but caught hundreds of smallies. My first trip self guided with a brand new boat on Presque Isle bay off Lake Erie PA waters I caught 2 over 5 and my first 6lber. Sweet achievement.

But there is a time and a place where I don't feel a guide interferes with my sense of achievement. Especially when out of country or state when taking my own boat is not practical. But I do agree

to tell the fairy to kiss off.

Just depends i guess. I've caught a ton of 8-10 lb bass from extremely well managed ponds so if I beat my record and caught one that weighed 15+ out of a pond it wouldn't deter me a bit from making that cast. I'd just make sure it was a frog or buzzbait I threw though lol.

Now on the river that's a different story one of these days I'll catch a 10+ on the river

No question in mind, I'm making the cast.

I've done a lot of guides, for me it's pretty hard to beat the backcounty.  Fly rod, guide poling, bonefish and permit, pretty cool stuff.

There's a problem with this scenario.  For those who said "no" you would not make that cast, you'd have to quit fishing.

I didn't see anything about the genie granting a wish.  The genie made a prophecy.

It wouldn't matter if your next cast took place immediately after the prophecy, or the next day, or the next month.  The only way not to make your next cast is to never cast again.

I'd make the cast, and tell the genie to stuff it.

If I'm out on the water I would cast regardless if a genie tells me I'm gonna catch a big one. I'm there to fish not question if I should throw in or not, especially since I was just casting in the same area

After laying out the scale and the camera, and then setting up the video camera -

I'm casting - and then handing the rod to my wife.

Most definitely. I know this is blasphemous but, there are other fish of a lifetime, besides bass.

I'd make the cast, absolutely.

I don't want my last cast ever to be the biggest bass of my life, you know what I mean? Bass fishing isn't the most important thing in my life. I want to catch it when I can. If it is when the Genie says, then so be it. There will be plenty more bass of weight up to that "lifetime" catch to keep me sated!

I'd cast, catch the fish.  Take pictures, get my Citation from the state (myself and my friends do not have any citations and think that is the plateau to shoot for), release the fish.  Gloat in front of my fishing buddies, and not tell them what the genie did for me.  Or, more importantly, not tell them were they can find that genie.
