  1. I listen for the splashing of the fish and try to figure out if it was a bass, catfish, or a gar. I dont even listen to the radio in the truck... Guess I'm not a music person.
  2. Ok folks! Hands down, the Abrazx is the best flouro I've ever used! I tested it to the max today! The Hybrids here are spawning and I found a hot spot for them. I was throwing a Smithwick rattlin rogue on 12# test and I hung into a 10# hybrid, then into another 10#er, usually I retie after a big fish, but today I wanted to see how far I could take it. I brought 7 in the boat ( and all of them were over 9lbs) and about a dozen more that never made it in the boat. I never retied... I don't know what they make their line out of, but they have definitely earned all my business from this point on ( or until something changes )
  3. i dont like sticking my hand in the mouth of a lively thrashing bass with multiple treble hooks , so I'll do what I can to wear the fish down, but not out. Big bass dont last that long in a good fight and I really dont want to hurt the fish, and I dont want to loose the fish. If the fight is more than a minute or two I may be starting to do damage to the health of the fish ( and the hook or hook set have done enough damage already). so thats my goal to a big fish. dinks just come on in the boat and then thrown back all less than 30 seconds.
  4. 1/2 oz, so your searching deep waters with a jig? 7' MH/F - I have a SKEET REESE Big worm/football jig rod for this tactic. I have another 7' rod for my other jigs Its a heavy/fast, I throw just about anything with it, but I bought it with flippin n pitchin in mind- turned out to be to short for my liking...
  5. I see your yellow tags ... 2.96 for em! dont tell my wife, but I just reloaded all the "red eyes" i've lost so far and got a couple I didnt have before... Thank God she doesnt see my cc statement, or I might be single!
  6. "Bleeding Tubes" pepper pearl, and the smithwick rattlin rogue! and hope the wind is at my back!
  7. I fished one of the local tournaments on Thursday, I caught 9 or 10 fish, but nothing worth a fudge... three fish stringer ( two any size, one has to be over 18" as the third) but i did manage to put 3 and 1/2 lbs on my board for the championship. Not a great start... but its a start!
  8. Start with the currents, which way is the wind blowing on it? gentle wind I would be more concerned with the flow of the closest river bed or creek bed. a hard wind I would start on the wind blown side first, cast all directions to it and keep casting as you pass over it. Fish will usually ambush into the current so keep this in mind while your targeting the point. Fan cast several times over, the school may be compact and you may need to hit the first one in the head to get them into a feeding frenzy. Scan for pockets just off the point and target those next. LMB swim and feed together, but they dont do it in coordinated fashion. you'll have them in the cover, away from the cover, above the cover but its mostly every fish for themselves... even when they are schooling baitfish. so a few of them may be in one spot while others can be 5 feet to the left and 3 feet deeper and the ones you are targeting may not be feeding at this time and the others are, but they are only looking for forage on the bottom... Welcome to the wonderful world of trying to figure out the black bass...
  9. I'm going to say this about the low priced baitcasters... If its a magnetic brake, check and see if it has all 6 magnets on the caliper. I got a couple cheapies and both only had 5 magnets. I dont know how many times I wanted to throw the combo into the drink but I didnt. If its centrifuge brake make sure that they are opposing each other. Most of my birdnests come from to much snap in the beginning of the cast with no follow through.
  10. I'm working on skipping under the docks and boathouses. The thing thats driving me nuts right now is I'm always hitting the standing posts and then having the birdnest from hell to deal with. I have 12 inches of structure to water clearance and 6 feet between posts but I always seem to hit the post. Sooner or later I'll get it or die of a heart attack from the stress!
  11. Improved albright here. It's what I learned first and can tie it without having to think about it to much. Have yet to have it break... even when I got an umbrella rig stuck up in a tree.
  12. Ok! I struggled about this for a while and finally bought the Seaguar abrazx in 12, 15, and 17 lb tests. I bent a mustad EWG 4/0 straight with the 17lbs test. I got hung up in some timber and I pulled and pulled, had the trolling motor on 5 trying to break the line and finally it let go. I was absolutely surprised when I reeled the line in and the hook was still there almost bent straight. I ran the line across my lips just to see how rough it would be and it wasnt bad at all. Caught a few fish later, checked it again, still smooth. Caught a 9# hybrid a few casts later, and this ALWAYS trashes the line. I checked it and would you believe that it still wasn't that tore up.(and I did retie after each event) After all that I am thoroughly sold on this line now! Sure its more expensive but I'll pay from what its shown me after last weekend. I do use a line conditioner (oil based - REAL MAGIC) to keep the line from the memory of the spool. So thats my 2 cents worth of experience. Hope it helps...
  13. I have a couple of the H2O ethos and zero complaints for the price. MH and an extra heavy for an umbrella rig pole. The MH has pulled in lots of 2 thru 5lbs black bass and several 10+ hybrids. I like em, but I stare and dream about Ducketts and G Loomis....
  14. this sounds like it aught to be interesting!
  15. I cheat at night, I have a drop in green light that brings in the bait fish...
  16. I got this for my Grandfather when I was 5. He gave it back to me just recently cause he cant fish anymore due to failing health. I remember vividly giving it to him for a birthday gift and I saw him use it a couple time growing up. I know its a joke for use as a real fishing pole, but sure brings back a lot a great memories of a better time in life.
  17. my experience is crawfish have caught more than baitfish, although it is a close race. I didnt include a soft plastic as a trailer in my decision either. I also didnt include worms because I catch more fish with a shakey head than anything else I use.
  18. I'm a firm believer in if I give a gift, it's none of my business what they do with it... perhaps he may have an attachment to it, he may break it. Either way, it is his. I bought my older son a Zebco spinner combo at Wal-Mart for 28 bucks and he still has it. Caught a bunch of fish with it.
  19. I take my Catahoula/terrier mix to all my outdoors stuff. Someone abandoned him and three brothers and sisters at my deer lease during the last week of hunting season and I just couldnt leave them there. I found homes for the other three and kept Duece. Duece love riding in the truck and boat. He has his own spot to hide from the sun under the steering wheel. He's a good boat guard. If he knows you he will let you close to the boat. If he doesnt know you, he lets me know, and he not obnoxious about it. When Duece barks- something aint right! He had his first experience with a deep diver crank bait last time we went out... I guess when I was pulling the crankin stick out of the rod box he was sniffing it and it got hold of him on his nose cause he was runnin around and around the back seat trying to get away from it yelpin like crazy! He hasnt tried to sniff anything I pull out of the rod box since.
  20. kvd 6xd, spro aruku, for deep waters kvd 5xd, spro for midds smithwick rogue for shallow and just about every color of the rainbow for squarebill - never quite know what the fish favor so have to be flexible...
  21. Black Charlies finness shakey head on the ledge just above cover dropping off into it! ALWAYS GOOD FOR A DINK OR HAWG.
