Bass coming off swimbait top hook
Your not doing anything wrong. Sometimes bass come at the bait straight from the rear and fold the paddle tail forward and over the point of the hook preventing the required penetration past the barb.

Underutilized...
A grub, plain and simple. I used to throw a grub and even pitch them like a finesse bait in medium vegetation. I’ve got to get back to that deal. Thanks for bringing the topic up!

Green pumpkin vs watermelon
It seems most company’s watermelon is more translucent so it is a better base to add metal flake accents. Watermelon red flake can be really good at times.

Dobyns crankbait rod question
Other than the blanks being unsanded the action and power to stated rating are pretty accurate. Handles and reel seats are identical to the Champion series. My K610-4CB has the same action as my Champion 704CB. Dobyns went with Seaguides alconite for the guide series and they are lined up on the spline. May experience with Seaguides has been been very good. Note the guide count unlike some manufactures who will short a guide to save money. The quality of cork on my Kadens has been AAA. Oh, and balance is typical Dobyns, neutral.

Dobyns crankbait rod question
Out of the models you listed the 735 CB Glass would be my choice hands down. The CB glass are composite blanks. You’ll get a delayed reaction tip with power. The Kaden series offers a 735 CB in all graphite. If you want to save a few bucks 80, this would also be an excellent choice.

Are Orange and Red Baits The Thing in the Spring ?
I figured red must have some special attraction, all the Jackhammers I bought have a little dealy on them. They all get bit but I’m missing all the bites. I need to change rods or something.

What Got The Juices Flowing?
My last trip in 2020, after a lousy COVID impacted season, I/we were able to get on a lake with lots of deep water structure. It was my first real chance to crank deep. I had back to back four plus pound fish from 18 feet or so. Those two fish absolutely got the juices flowing and in about a month the long rod will be back in my hands. I’m stoked to get that deep bite going again. Anyone else hot to get on something like that beside me? CC

Are Orange and Red Baits The Thing in the Spring ?
Red is a fickle color for me and most anglers I know here locally. Reddish browns and reddish greens have worked when there is ample stain to the water. I read that red is one of the first shades to loose it’s color as the light penetration decreases. It would seem reds would have good contrast though. I have enough baits in red hues to cover most scenarios though.

Technique Overload
This forum is extremely unique. It has thousands of members that cover the entire country and abroad. I can’t even imagine all the types of fisheries yet we try to offer ideas or advice in lures, color patterns, and techniques to effective fish those environments. I think newer anglers can be confused because they want it feel the need to be ultra versatile when they may be pond hopping from shore and that’s it. As we move forward it would everyone to try and establish some kind of context when addressing techniques. Where I fish may not be close to your situation and yours like mine. Generalized information may be even more helpful. A poor question will more often or not result in a poor answer. I would like to help anglers, especially new, learn to ask the right questions.

What makes you cover or not cover your rods?
I have a rod sleeve for every rod and a neoprene cover for every reel. My buddy broke the tips of three rods in one season. None after sleeves. The reel covers keep reels cleaner and prevent damage during runs in rough water. My club partner makes his own and saves a ton. They run about a buck each and can be cut to length for longer rods. When I see a Steez with boat rash for sale in makes me cringe.

Dobyns
There is one Dobyns model that would overlap fairly well for your applications and that’s the Kaden 735CB. Don’t let the 5 power fool you, it’s a CB power. The Blank is a bit more moderate in action without sacrificing power. The sweet spot will be 3/8-1/2 oz. so the vibrating jig is well in play. The 610-4CB will IMO would be a little under powered but it’s a great stick.

Rod suggestions for finesse swimbaits
Length is your friend. A Dobyns Champion 732SF with a 10 lb braid to leader will wing that light weight nicely and provide ample hook setting power. It’s a great DS and Ned rod as well.
