Mutual Fund Question
I manage money for a living and can simply tell you that.......there is no magic recipe. I would agree though that if you have the time, enough experience, and information resources you can usually do better than mutual funds and/or indexs picking well analyzed stocks, but.....most people DON'T!! As far as mutual funds or managed accounts I recommend them to most people when they ask. Picking a hot stock is great if people don't get too greedy and realize when to cash out, most DON'T. If you are a positional traded in today's market you can do very very well, but again most people don't have the time. So when looking for a mutual fund or managed account look for the following. 1. Performance relative to other family of funds and its relative index. How does it compare to other funds within the same family. For example if looking at a fund such as a small cap value fund, look at not only to top performers in the past year, but the last 3 to 5 years. 2. Once you do that narrow your list down to top 25% percentile. 3. Then look for a manager tenure. If the manager has been with the company less the 3 years, then a track record hasn't been built yet in my opinion to consider that fund. I like funds that have managers with at least 5 years under their belts. 4. Then look at expense ratios, turnover and load/no-load. Usually high expense ratios are a result of high turnover and actively trading manager. Point being is what good is it to have a top returning fund if you lose a significant percentage to expense. This is why some finance experts suggest that index funds can on average outperform mutual funds, but usually you'll find funds that beat the index even after subtracting expenses. These are the ones you want in your portfolio. Load vs. no load, I am fan of NO LOAD, because right off the bat you lose principal in a LOAD fund, but if the other previously mentioned aspects still have a particular fund coming out on top after the load then don't count it out, but in my book it must be a significant enough % return over no-loads for me to choose it. 5. Lastly, make sure you brush up on modern portfolio "theory" so you can figure out what type of asset allocation suits you and your investment style. Remember a diverse portfolio keeps you losing too much principal, but it also restricts you from beating all your high risk friends portfolios when the market is hot. ( http://www.investopedia.com/articles/pf/05/061505.asp ) If you really want to save yourself some time hire a CFP that is not affiliated with any brokerage and has a flat fee or a % of principal fee. Have her review your entire portfolio and see what she recommends.

Okeechobee On Fire!!!
So here is the deal, Friday afternoon they killed'em caught about 30-40 with about 5 over 4lbs and one pushing 6! Saturday was a different story though, the blue birds settled in and they only caught about 20 in the A.M., but quality was there to push a 18-20lb stringer. Most fish came south Indian Praire canal spawning areas off skinny dippers and texas rigged, with some taking the frog. Tight lines to all!!

Photo Buff input
I have done some research on Entry Level DSLRs and choose the Pentax K-x after reading multiple positive reviews from various sources. Can anyone recommend a photography book primarily focused on DSLR features and settings?

No Bass? Try Sailfish...
I don't think about LMB too much except this time of the year when the inshore bite is dismal. Many years ago after catching my first small 2# Jack I said to myself " Why am I bass fishing?". I've caught lots of sharks and many target them as game fish, so many different ways to catch them. I like fishing with a guide in the backcountry in the keys sight casting for small shark in the 10-50# range, medium spinning using plastic flukes on a jig head. Fishing for SHARKS especially when they make the winter run is tons of FUN. Ever see a spinner crash through the waves while chasing bait? Now imagine the bait being a top water imitation!!!!

Line Backer?
Mono backing all the way, sometimes I wrap electrical tape around backing. 20% of total line capacity is usually what I use as backing.

Braid again???
1. Daiwa Samurai 2. Stren's Superbraid if you can still get it 3. Suffix 4. Powerpro, unless its the one with higher braid count, then its up to 3.

So I'm in Las Vegas for a shortsale/REO summit...
I am primarily in securities, but as you stated early if you have the cash the ROI in real estate in the next coming years may surprise you.

So I'm in Las Vegas for a shortsale/REO summit...
I am currently in the process of purchasing single family homes and town houses from county auctions at about 40-60% below 2006 values in Palm Beach and Martin County Florida for courthouse auctions. I am in with a small group of investors and so far the turn around time is about 60-90 days on market, but I would say a large percentage of properties that are auctioned never meet the banks reserve!!! It should be very disconcerning knowing that the banks are holding on to these properties...must be killing their balance sheets. I am with Redline here I believe its at least 3 years in Florida before inventory is reasonable relative to sales, but if you have cash NOW and I repeat NOW NOW NOW is the time to buy. I have friends of mine that are purchasing primary residences that were out of their ballpark for roughly 1/3 of the price, but financing is hard to come by.

Smallest Battery For My 30 lbs TM?
I have a jon boat that I use both a 24 for local lakes and small canals and a 27 series for excursions into the everglades. I have used my 24 all day without problems pushing 36lbs of thrust, so I would go with lighter battery.

what's the best knot?
Best knot is all relative, I will say try these and tie the one your most comfortable with. 1. Uni to Uni (Bass fishing) 2. No Name to Bimini (Tarpon, Snook, and other heavy hitters) I haven't tried the Alberto, but honestly haven't had problems with a well tied uni to uni and when I go after salty fish I haven't had issues with the no name. Get proficient at one and stick to it.

Stage of fish in Florida right now?
On beds off beds, is the story here in Palm Beach Gardens. These record breaking rains cooled the temp a bit in my canal again, 67 F. I expected some major waves of spawners moving onto beds, so in the next month spawn, prespawn and postspawn patterns should be the ticket.

Cold Weather In Florida
