Traveling to Augusta, Ga in February - suggestions?
Yes the water level stayed down a few years due to drought conditions but have maintained good levels as of late, hence the bass fishing has really improved with that.Last year was great fishing and would expect this year to be as well.

Fluke style bait
A Zoom Super Fluke jr casts well for a small bait .You'll have to adjust the braking and tension knob & play with it.Important to insert the hook point dead center and out about 1/4 inch from the head and strait on the hook bend out it's back dead center or they won't run true for you.You want the bait to dart not turn in circles on th retrieve.A barrel swivel with a short leader works well. About 12 in to 18 in leader

Soft Plastic Jerk Baits In The Winter ?
I like to throw a super fluke in the winter.Like to kill it as you describe with a 4/0 ewg, 12inch leader with a barrel swivel. Also like to throw it on a ball head jig with the hook exposed through the back,1/8 or 1/4 oz let it fall and pop it.Throw em on a Carolina rig too.Super fluke and Super fluke jr just depends on the feed, they'll slam em

Back Health
Agree fusion should be last resort.i put in for titanium Coflex device as a less invasive procedure than fusion but denied by my insurance co.if I were 65 Medicare would pay for it in Ga, Tenn & Alabama.it has been proven highly successful alternative in Germany & the U.S.I'd just soon take an arse whupping as have a fusion but that's how the mop flopped in my case.Go with conservative treatment as long as you can folks. My point is just take care of that back
