Was camping (with the family) for the weekend at a lake in ARK called Bear Creek. Saw bass doing this most of the week end and new that trying to get to where they were feeding was useless (worse than keeping water from someone dieing of thirst :'(). We were fixing to leave and I had to take the boat back to the ramp to load up and all of a sudden the water was almost boiling with fish around me ;D! Had a Devil's Horse tied on and threw a little ways out and almost instantly hooked a bass. While reeling him in I could see another bass trying to take the lure out of his mouth ! By the time I got him in and unhooked they were already going deeper and moving off. Still wishing it would happen AGAIN!!! As Ever, skillet

I mostly fish ponds and small lakes and will use most anything that I would use in a bigger lake except diving cranks and it's not that they don't work, unless you want to go swimming, you lose a lot to hang-ups. I use a lot of soft plastics and you can't beat an original Rapala floater. Depending how small these ponds are and how many friends you are talking about, you can really put the hurt on small waters. Don't over do it... As Ever, skillet

Don't do it near as much as I used to, but I've got a real old Shimano on an ultra light rod that I pull out every now and then for bream fishing. If bream got as big as bass, it would be Bream Fishing Resource ... As Ever, skillet

Have never used that one myself. It does look a lot like a Devil's Horse (a favorite of mine). It's probably one of those baits that you have to let the fish tell you how they want it. After casting let it sit for a little and then twitch it towards you once and let it sit again (quite a few strikes in those 2 twitches). Then twitch it all the way back to you or vary the number of twitches between letting it sit until you find what they want. You do want some chop on the water as opposed to no wind and smooth as glass because of the amount of commotion it probably makes. Good luck with it ;D... As Ever, skillet

Yea they still make it. The few times I've seen it was in small out of the way bait shops off the beaten path. I bought my first baitcaster with money I saved from my paper route. Can't remember the brand but it was real inexpensive. At the time I didn't know anyone who used reels. It had the line you are talking about on it. I don't know how I learned to use the reel, with it being as cheap as it was and the charastics of that line. If you're feeling nostalgic about, I don't know if we're talking about the same line or not. The resistance when casting was really bad, there was no picking out a "professional overrun" and it sank when it got wet. The only good thing I remember about it was it would last forever. There are probably yoyos and drop lines still around that the yoyos and hooks have rusted away but that line is still there. Didn't mean to rain on your parade, just personal opinion ... I like what Catt said and will add that you can fish them up and down in the whole water column, from top (retrieve fast enough to put a bulge in the surface of the water) to bottom (slow roll them just off the bottom). LBH is probably right about the size of the tank, especially if you're going to try and keep him if he gets larger. Had friends that did it. They will eat crickets, worms and (depending on size) small minnows. One that I know of learned to eat flaked goldfish food. The smaller the tank, the more you will need a bubbler for oxygen. I used the older Zebco 33s for a number of years and liked them except for the gear ratio. Have heard the newer ones aren't as good. Guess it's like RW said, no one is trying to upgrade them. Even with the heat being what it is (blast furnace) I would still take some top water lures for really early or very late in the day. From what you said, you've never caught a bass on top water. I don't think I've ever talked to anyone that wouldn't rather catch fish on top. It's GREAT!!! Do a search on topwater baits on this forum, a lot of really good information on what type and action of each type. GOOD LUCK!!
