Braid, Fluoro, & Mono Line Life expectancy
You need to check for nicks and frays, but fluorocarbon and braid will last indefinitely. Some copolymers have an indefinite shelf life, too. Mono, if properly stored (moderate temperatures and away from direct sunlight) can last for years, but I think should be changed occasionally, at least once a year. 8-)

circle hooks
I use #4 Gamakatsu Octopus Circle Hooks exclusively with live bait. 95% of the fish are solidly hooked in the jaw joint. Gut hooks are extremely rare. If you use circle hooks, do not set the hooks, this simply pulls them out of the mouth. Lift your rod forcefully and maintain pressure, this will drive the hook deeply into the flesh. Once hooked-up, bass rarely pull off. 8-)

Baitcast Rod's Line Weight Question
P-Line CXX is approximately 40% stronger than the stated breaking strength: 8 X 1.40 = 11.2 lb test. #12 Yo-Zuri Hybrid is 19.5 lb test and is what I recommend for baitcasting rigs. 8-)

Can't Fix Stupid
I don't understand why wealthy, high profile celebrities (Britney Spears and Paris Hilton come to mind) haven't hired a full-time bodyguard/ chauffer. Maybe an X-Navy Seal or two. For a few hundred thousand dollars security issues, partying and weapon possession could be resolved. For Plexico, the cost would be significantly less than $35mm! :

What would you prefer.
Tackle. Although I fish technique specific rods, all my (or anyone's) fishing could be done on one combination. Get some tackle, catch a bunch of fish and build on what you have. Here are some suggestions: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1143177139 8-)

How's Everyone Fishing Lately?
It's Primetime on the Tennessee River. Our smallmouth season gets started in October and runs through about mid-March. My partner caught his PB in November, 2004; mine were caught two months later, January, 2005. Those are the fish in my avatar. 8-)
