Curado 5.0 vs 7.0
The 7:0 can be used as an all-around reel. 5:0 is generally considered technique specific: crankbaits in general, or more specifically, deep running crankbaits. 8-)

Spinning reel and rod suggestions
Shimano Stradic 2500FI matched to a G. Loomis IMX SJR783 or SJR843 would make a perfect combination! The St. Croix Legend Elite is being replaced and you might find the current models on sale and in your price range. I fish an ES70MF and would highly recommend this rod. 8-)

Swimbait Rod and Reel?
You don't need special equipment for Mattlures Baby Bass or other swimbaits in that weight class. A medium heavy or heavy bass rod is just fine. As far as spinning vs. baitcasting equipment, use what you are comfortable with, it really doesn't make any difference. That said, I prefer baitcasting gear for "power fishing", spinning tackle for finesse. 8-)

LH vs RH...why?
There is actually good reason for the way fishing equipment is designed and it's not just "old school": (Note George Welcome's explanation) http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1187794805 8-)

Oil Prices Plunge!
With the ongoing conflict in Georgia, oil has surged the last several days. After briefly touching $111, September futures rose roughly $10. Todays's surprising turnaround has resulted in a decline of $6.50 to $114.68. The oil market will continue to be very volatile, with high "event risk", but should continue to trend down. There appears to be significant resistance at $110, but once through that level, a quick drop into the mid $80s is a possibity with a bottom around $65 per barrel. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12400801/wid/18298287/ 8-)

QUALITY RODS AND REELS YOU CAN GET FOR UNDER 100 BUCKS
That's because many of the Triumphs were defective, at least initially. For many St. Croix fans, it was an embarassment. >
