Your Scenario...
Well, I have posted a few comments on fishing the Fat Ika. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1141053342 http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1187047441 Anyhow, I always fish this bait weightless and weedless on a 4/0 EWG Gamakatsu or XPoint Offset Worm Hook; skirt up (towards your line). 8-)

Spawns over....now what?
Welcome aboard! Everyone has their favorite time of year, but post-spawn is the best for me. The fish are hungry and aggressive. I have been having some success early with the Cavitron Buzzbait and great success with different jigs, including the 3/8 oz Evolution. I think I might do better with soft plastics, at least for numbers, but I haven't fished any in awhile...I have a severe case of Jiggy-itis. 8-)

What to do in Branson, MO.???
You might catch a few stocker trout from the bank, but I would consider it a waste of time.

Where do they hide in the summer?
Welcome aboard! Find the baitfish and the smallmouth will be at the same depth. 8-)

Should I or not?
Absolutely! To fish jigs and soft plastics you need a rod with a firm tip. For "all-around" use, 6 1/2' or 7' Medium or Medium Heavy Power/ Fast Action rod will do the trick. I prefer a M/F spinning rod for soft plastics and a H/F baitcaster for jigs, but that is just a matter of personal preference. 8-)

Your Scenario...
Rod 1. Rapala X-Rap Rod 2. Fat Ika Rod 3. Buzzbait or your favorite topwater In low light I would alternate fishing rods 1 & 3. After the sun rises above the treeline, Rod 2. Throughout the day, soft plastics and jigs would be my main choice, but for a change of pace, I would give the Rat-L-Trap and Mattlures Baby Bass a workout, too. If you have grass or other cover, that's where I would start early. Later I would recommend structure in deeper water, i.e., steeply sloped rocky points. Good luck! p.s. If you decide to target smallmouth. I think you should also carry single tail grubs (5 1/2" GYCB Single Tail, clear with silver flakes) and 3 1/2" tubes (Mizmo, Kent's Classic or squash green).

*** 3rd Annual Roadtrip Video!!! ***
Just start planning for next year, April 19th - 24th. The video captured a few moments, but the trip is much more. Kentucky Lake offers the potential for some great fishing, but the gathering is an experience you will never forget. Allocate some of your vacation time to this event, you will not be disappointed! No excuses! 8-)

Should I or not?
Well, I would suggest a totally different approach. Your hubby is the zen master with a jig, fishes soft plastics as well and developed his own style with hard jerkbaits. However, when you are starting out, a robust bite is so much easier. I recommend moving lures. This time of year buzzbaits are hot. Shallow running crankbaits and spinnerbaits will produce bites. Bud and I have had great luck swimming a GYCB Kreature, both weightless and weighted. All of these lures are fished with a basic cast and retrieve. Strikes are generally very aggressive, so there is no "maybe". Fishing these baits will give you a feeling for grass, wood and rocks which will make the transition to finesse presentations much less stressful. Crawl before you walk; walk before you run. When you are ready for the "soft touch", CJ has all the answers. I just don't think that's the place to start. Good luck! -Kent 8-)

hi and help
Welcome aboard! Spend some time reading through the "Fishing Articles" at the top of the page, especially the "Beginners" section. Then go back through the various sections here on the Forum and read some of the threads that interest you. Here's a couple to get you started: https://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1158577137 https://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1182371999 8-)

Old timers vs New Guys
I think it means the "old farts" were pretty good "back in the day" and surprisingly, a few still compete. When KVD accomplishes what others have done, perhaps he will become "one of the best". Right now, he's just tops among today's competitors. Popular? Yes, of course, but KVD hasn't earned a spot on the "All Time" list at this point in his career. 8-)

New Shak-E2 Heads have been shipped
I did and sent you a "Thank you" note, but "THANKS" again. In addition to some monsters caught on the 3/8 oz Evolution jigs, I caught a 7-8 lb pig on my first morning outing at a new "secret pond" on your 3/8 oz Cavitron Buzzbait (black on black). When I catch a biggun' I'll try to get a pic, I certainly owe you one! -Kent 8-)

Finding fish
Nope. You can just "go fishing" and find out after a few outings, but if you want to narrow your seach, find out when the pond was built and if it was stocked. Otherwise, until you have fished a pond enough to know where they never are, every inch of shoreline holds possibility. I recently discovered a "secret pond" just minutes from my house. It's surrounded by a new neighborhood, but the water itself is part of a ten year old city park. Over the last three weeks I've caught forty-three bass, all but four were 5 lbs or better. All but one caught on jigs, the exception was 7-8 lbs caught on my first morning outing on a Cavitron Buzzbait. BTW, the pond doesn't look "interesting". 8-)
