Sounds to me that on the right day you could kill 'em with a bare hook! :

Which St Croix Avid rod do you use for topwater?
The AC66MF, Fast Action with a soft tip. You will like this rod for jerkbaits, crankbaits, buzzbaits and spinnerbaits, too

Best value in jigs
Well, for $2.99 you should take a CLOSE look at earthworm77's jigs. They say, "The devil's in the details," and Craig pays attention to details.

Recreational Angler vs. Competitive
Here is a thread running along those same lines: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1196114229 With regard to tackle, a lot of us just like to collect it, just "have it", look at it and rearrange the stuff on occasion. I only fish a few lures in any class (technique), at least 75% of my stuff has never been fished, may never be used. I have GYCB grubs that I bought in 1997, rigged in a "ready box" that I still plan to fish...someday.

Best value in jigs
Not really looking to spend MORE per jig, but thanks my mistake. I think I misunderstood your meaning of "value". Jigs are not all equal, some are far more effective than others. To me, "value' means improving the chances of a bite from a BIG bass, hooking up and landing the fish.

Drifting away from Senkos
Nope. I still have a couple of bags from 1997. They are EXACTLY the same as new baits.

Will the Ravens beat the Patriots?
I've noticed this a lot in football games: "If we hadn't run out of time, and scored more points, WE would have won!" Patriots "find a way to win".

Big Baits
I fish full size Spooks, Sammys, Pointer 128, 3/4 oz Ledgebuster spinnerbaits and 1/2 oz Micro Munch Tackle jigs with a Doublewide Beaver. That jig-rig is HUGE!

Practiced baitcasting yesterday
That is not the case at all. When members specify a pricing point, equipment that is in that general price range is almost always recommended.

Trophy Bass Fishing ? for { Winter }
As much as color, the particular trailer seems to be important right now. I fish the standard 1/2 oz black jig with a blue trailer, specifically the GYCB Kreature, Fat Baby Craw and Doublewide Beaver. For some reason green on green has been hot lately. I'm fishing a Micro Munch Tackle 1/2 oz "forrest green" with a GYCB Flappin' Hog (watermelon w/ black flakes). Now that the cold has arrived, I'll probably focus on an Uncle Josh pork trailer. Presentation: Slow and slower on the bottom. I am NOT dragging them, but lifting the bait to immitate a crawdad moving over a rock.

Rat-L-Traps
For most of us "old farts" the Rat-L-Trap or other brands of this basic lure are and have always been, one of our most productive lures. I still fish some Traps, but I have a preference for the Yo-Zuri RatlN' Vibe and the LC LV300/ Max500. Personally, I have not caught a lot of monsters on these lures, but I've had days catching boatloads of 3-5lb bass on consecutive casts! This is an easy lure to fish and should be included in everyone's "must have" collection.

Drifting away from Senkos
Wow! I have been Mr. Senko/ Fat Ika for a long time, but after two years of working on the jig, I finally "got it". I haven't fished a Senko or Fat Ika in months. Strang isn't it? I'm sure these soft plastics will always be a part of the mix for me, they have been the most productive lures I have ever fished, but I have moved on to the jig as my main finesse bait.

Got the rods down..how bout' the reels???
I did NOT mean to be offensive, just brutally honest. I'm giving you some straight up advice which is what I thought you were asking for on this thread.

Got the rods down..how bout' the reels???
You must be confused... If your interest is only spincast, just go with the Zebco 33, but if you plan to stick with bass fishing, you're going to need to step-up. Spincasting equipment is for kids and people who don't fish.

Stickbait help!
Well, at Bull Shoals in north central Arkansas, the deepest water I fish is around 350'. The water is gin clear and fish come up from deep water for these lures. I fish for bass (green & brown), striper and walley using the LC Pointer 128 most of the time. Sometimes I'll throw the Pointer 100 or the Husky Jerk and occasionally, an X-Rap. If my partner/ guide gets on them with a Rogue (that's all he fishes), I'll switch to that, too.
-
Stickbait help!
The "standard size" LC is the 100. The original X-Rap is 08 ( 3 1/8" 1/4 oz). The Husky Jerk I prefer is HJ14 (5 1/2" 1/2 oz). No modifications required or suggested.
