which of these two reels for a newbie bait caster?
Welcome aboard! There are many reels at the pricing point you are considering and I know the choices can be confusing, but I think you should at least take a look at the Shimano Citica: http://fish.shimano.com/catalog/fish/products/group_detail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302036642&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181270&bmUID=1196088532875 I would recommend the CI100DSV which you might find for around $85.

How often do you upgrade or buy new rods and reel?
After years of experimenting, several years ago I found a couple of brands that I preferred. Starting with core rods (H/F baitcaster, M/F (firm tip) spinning and a M/F (soft tip) baitcaster for treble hooks) I have added technique specific rods over the last several years. So, for me, it's not about replacement, but rather, additions. Over the last several weeks, as a result of the St. Croix sale, I have "completed" my rod collection and matched up these rods with comparable reels. The Bait Monkey was so impressed, He told me I don't have to buy anything else this year (2007 ). 8-)

Best Spinning Reel for under $100
Hey! Where's the posse? Did you guys miss this thread or just getting tired of repeating the same ole' thing? Okay, this "might" have been mentioned before, but here goes: Among Shimano enthusiasts, the only argument at this general pricing point is whether the Symetre or Stradic is the "best value". To save some money, the "old" Stradic is on sale for around $80, about the same as a Symetre. (The new Stradic is totally redesigned and around $160). These reels are what I consider the "Best Spinning Reel for Under $100".

What is up with this bass?Guys,
Wow! This is so weird. I caught a bass last Wednesday afternoon with the pigmentation in my local pond. I had seen this bass (or another with the pigmentation) on occasion for the past year or so, but this was the first time I had caught one. I closely examined the fish and it appeared perfectly healthy, fought nicely and was thick (well fed). I hope you guys are right and this is nothing more than an annomally.

Lucky Craft hooks.
The easiest thing to do is go to a retailer and match up replacement hooks with the hooks on a new lure. You can do this by sight, it is not necessary to actually measure the hooks. Lucky Craft uses VMC hooks, but Gamakatsu or Owner replacements will be fine.

to the bait monkey
The Bait Monkey is a part of many posts and is credited with all of them. He lives among us. He usually doesn't tell people to buy things, He is more subtle and provides the reasons why. He is suggestive and complimentary, and helps justify our "needs". In some ways the Bait Monkey is quite helpful, alerting BassResource.com members to new products and techniques. He is part of the fabric that binds many elements into what we call fishing. His favorite holiday is Christmas, but unlike Santa Claus, the Bait Monkey works year around. He is especially interested in birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions (like payday!). Ignore Him if you like, some believe He is harmless. 8-)

MIZZOU-RAH! TIGERS! #1
For the first time in the long history of Missouri football, today THE University of Missouri is ranked NUMERO UNO! Next week it's Tigers vs. Sooners for the Big 12 Championship. GO TIGERS! 8-)

thursday night : green bay vs cowboys
I like 'em both! The Cowboy's seem to be better balanced, but this is Brett's year. Whichever team you're rooting for, I'm with you, too! 8-)

Lucky Craft Pointers 100 VS. 128
When I first started collecting Pointers, I started with the 128. After fishing both the 100 and 128 for the past three or four years, I see no advantage in fishing the 128. Not only from a "production" basis, but also in terms of the equipment: the 128 requires a heavier rod than what I use for my "standard" jekbait set-up. These days, the only time I fish the 128 is at night when my main target is walley.

worst fishing conditions
On Wednesday I left work early for Thanksgiving. Spent a couple of hours on a local pond and had a BIG afternoon. This was right before a massive cold fron moved in, heavy rain and a thirty degree temperature drop. Fishing the same pond for a few hours on and off, Friday, Saturday and today I've gone 10 fishing hours without so much as a bite. Cold, muddy water sucks!

Kansas Jayhawks vs. Missouri Tigers
Nope ... that was Brad Pitt. It's happened before : I was wondering the same thing, but you're probably right. Brad is a MU grad. 8-)

Christmas is coming soon.............
I must be getting clothes. Just noticed a BPS sack in the trunk of the wife's car today and I KNOW she' not shopping for tackle! Girls find sooooo many ways to waste money. :

Sorry, I haven't been around
Probably need a package of the new Mattlures Minnow that he just introduced. What a coincidence, just in time for Christmas! http://www.***.com/descpageSWMMATT-MLSD.html Well now, which color patterns should I double up on? 8-)

Kansas Jayhawks vs. Missouri Tigers
Mizzou dominates, at least so far. Kansas has been flat, with only one big play all night. 28-7 with a quarter to go.

need help choosing hooks,sinkers
For most soft plastics, I recommend 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hooks. I fish Gamakatsu and XPoint, Owner is an other high quality hook. Do NOT skimp on hooks or line, save money somewhere else. These are the two most important parts of your fishing tackle package.

Line??
Vicious has been panned on this and other forums as the worst line on the planet. I know some people like Vanish, too. I just can't picture anyone experimenting with either line, almost any alternative would be a better choice. We all have our favorites, but neither of these would be among them.

Kansas Jayhawks vs. Missouri Tigers
Well, for me the Huskers/ Sooners (1971) was the college "Game of the Century". The "Ice Bowl" was the pro game of all time. Sunday's Dallas/Greenbay match-up has that same aura of a championship. I hope both games live up to the hype. As a Mizzou grad, I do have a favorite!

40% off most St. Croix @ Reedssports....
roadwarrior responded: AC66MF This rod is Fast Action, but has a soft tip. I recommend the rod for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, topwater and jerkbaits. It is one of my favorites. AC70MM Medium Power/ Moderate Action. This is the perfect rod for most crankbaits (not big, deep divers however). This rod can also be used to fish other "treble hook" lures. So roadwarrior which Avid rod do you like for plastice, jigs and the deep diver crankbaits? Thanks, Well, for me it's a Legend Elite EC70MF, but I would still recommend the AC68MXF for soft plastics. Deep diving crankbaits require a different rod. For most treble hooks, the AC66MF (soft tip) will work, but if you want to be more technique specific, look to the AC70MM.
