Winter Smallmouth
#4 or #6 Gamakatsu Octopus Circle Hook. When you fish with this hook, NEVER "set the hook." Lower your rod tip when you detect a bite, then FIRMLY lift the rod tip and reel. Maintain pressure on the fish at all times. 8-)

Lost Lures from Shore
Nope. I don't throw lures except topwater, buzzbaits and spinnerbaits. I still lose a spinnerbait every now and then. My advice is to fish stuff you expect to lose: soft plastics and jigs. 8-)

If it's Browns Creek Lake, then probably within 50 air miles: http://www.state.tn.us/twra/fish/pond/TWRAfamlake/brownscreek.html 8-)

Guntersville trip
Depends a lot on the weather. If it's warm, the bass will be in the grass and shallow water. Two years ago we had our Roadtrip at Guntersville, but the weather sucked! I caught a few on a Xr50 Blue silver/ Orange and a Senko. Glenn caught a few on a spinnerbait and Keri had luck with a Rat-L-Trap. Maybe some of the other guys will have more suggestions. Good luck! 8-)

tips for baitcasting overhead
Mostly practice, but here's a tip: Rotate your wrist so that the handle is facing up as you complete the cast. When you are just starting out, pick a target 10 yards out. Once you have that mastered, extend your targets to 15 and 20 yards. It takes time to train your thumb, don't concentrate on accuracy until you become comfortable with managing the reel. Another issue might be your rod. Initially, a soft tip or moderate action is easier to work with. Finally, practice with a 1/2 oz weight, not a lure. This takes air resistance out of the equation. 8-)

Yeah, it's not Pickwick, but it just demonstrates what is possible in the region. The lake had to be public. I don't think TWRA would be shocking private water. 8-)

Evolution Jigs
Well, we have two other jig threads going in this section right now. This thread was about Evolution Jigs and has moved way off topic. Use the other threads to talk about your favorite jigs. Good night Irene -Kent a.k.a. roadwarrior Global Moderator

Couple of Questions.........
I don't know where you live, but the Great Lakes region produces some 7's and I think one of the states boasts a 9-4 state record. More typically, 4-6 is a good range. In the Mid South, the smallmouth can get much bigger. http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/smallmouth_record.html 8-)

BPS Price Increase
It's more likely a GYCB price increase not a BPS increase. I would guess they upped their retail price and the other retailers will follow eventually. Or so it seems to me. No, that's not the case at all: http://***/cgi-bin/order/scan/co=yes/sf=category/se=soft/sf=description/se=senko?4hiXzEPQ;;39 If you look closely, BPS is overcharging for many (most?) merchandise. Online they rip your eyes out with shipping charges. Locally, they are really the only game in town for a lot of stuff. So, I still shop there, but I'm a little more selective than I used to be. >

I like his jigs, too! Ordered some 3/4 oz football heads in black with custom skirts for a BIG presentation. Give him a try, you won't be disappointed. 8-)

Gamakatsu Hooks
There is nothing "under the table". We get some samples. Some I like, some I don't. If I have positive comments I will post them, otherwise not. If you join us at the Road Trip, you too will get a $100+ goodie bag. Some of the stuff you will like and the rest you can give away or throw away. On top of all that, our sponsors give a lot more away in the raffle. Back on topic, I appreciate all the responses to this thread. 8-)

Chronarch 50MG
Although I love the CH50MG, unless you are a collector, the new Curado 200E7 is the way to go. Now, I love them both, but the CH50MG is more of a specialty reel as opposed to an "all-round" Curado. 8-)

Fishing gloves...
No problmo. Gloves are important for those of us that continue to fish through the seasons. I wear cotton gloves when we are moving, but don't wear them while I'm fishing. 8-)

How often do you respool?
Rarely. I only add line as needed to maintain a full spool. That generally means replacing 80-100 yards of fresh line every now and then. The only exceptions are reels with low capacity: Core, CH50MG and Stella 1000. 8-)

Welcome aboard! Maine has some great smallmouth water. I wouldn't waste time with green fish if I lived there. 8-)

10 lb. or better
Great point! I would just add, it doesn't hurt to fish in Texas, Florida, Georgia and Kalifornia, too!
