Best scale for the $$
Chatillion IN series brass spring scales. They can be had for around $75 new. They last longer than their owners and haven't changed in decades so there are plenty of used ones on ebay. A 50 year old used one is just as good as a new one. They will last longer than humanity.

How do Minn Kota built in transducers work on the trolling motors if it's turning?
I was surprised they put down imaging on the TM for that very reason. A high percentage of anglers don’t understand how the shape of the sonar beam affects what they are seeing and will be confused by the results. I asked someone at Humminbird about this and he said it was for when you are moving in a straight line and traditional 2D is still there for when you are not. I think it will be confusing for many but if you know why you’re seeing what you’re seeing then down imaging will give you useful information that you won’t get with 2D. It might get really crazy when the TM is on Spotlock and the thing is turning like crazy on it’s on.

The UNimportance of crankbait details
More interesting information from @Team9nine. I think we give our lures more credit than they deserve.

As a lefty if I get a right hand reel is there any reason I need to switch hands after casts?
I think you will have a hard time finding one. I suspect that all the lefties will be fishing right hand reels. Ott Defoe is the only lefty I can think of. He uses right hand reels.

Can anyone name a pro angler that cast left, switches hands, and reels left?

Cast with you left and keep the rod in your left so you can use your dominant hand to feel the bite and work the bait. The exception might be when you are fishing a fast retrieve. I’m right handed and used left hand reels on my slow retrieve rods so I can use my dominant hand to fish. I use right hand reels on my cranking rods and switch hands after I cast because I can crank better with my dominant hand and all I have to do with my left hand is hold the rod.

Jig skirt colors
I look at the water clarity, the water temperature, the barometric pressure, and the main forage in the lake. Then I tie on a black and blue jig and start fishing.

fish finder screens
Mostly microfiber cloth and occasionally a lens cleaning wipe.

Action Cameras for fishing
LOL.. That’s what video editing is for. You can catch a fish on every cast just like Bill Dance.

Anyone Superstitious?
So a guy goes fishing with a new hat and a new lure. He has a great day. Was it because the new hat is lucky? Was it because the new lure is the best lure ever? or was it just a good day? It's probably a bigger mistake to give too much credit to the lure than it is to give any credit to the hat. It's human nature to try to explain what are largely random events both good and bad. That's the nature of superstition. Being able to interpret everything that happens on the water and put it in its proper context is a critical fishing skill. You do need a hat to keep the sun out of your eyes so it might as well be the lucky hat. ?

Garmin vs Hummingbird?
If good maps are important to the way you fish, then I would recommend that you check out the maps that are available for the units you are considering. All Lakemaster maps are not of equal quality and I think some are made from the same sources as other maps on the market. The Kentucky Lake map was made from a recent sonar survey. It has details that you will not find on other maps but it also has many errors. There are many things that I don’t like about my Humminbirds but I would never consider changing just because the Kentucky Lake map is so important to me. I have a friend that only fishes visible cover and almost never looks at a map. It all depends on how you fish and where you fish.

Garmin vs Hummingbird?
Humminbird’s come with base maps installed. You have to by the Lakemaster maps. From what I have seen, the base maps on Helix are pretty bad. It’s possible the new Helix ship with better maps than what I’ve seen. Base maps are much better on Solix but still nothing like Lakemaster.

Garmin vs Hummingbird?
I’m a committed Humminbird user simply because they have by far the best maps of the lakes I fish. I fish mostly offshore so good maps are critical to me. The Lakemaster map of Kentucky Lake has done more to improve my fishing than any product I have purchased in the last 20 years.

Helix Water Depth Issues
If you turn off all the filters on your unit you will see that in shallow water, 2D sonar is a mess. You have strong surface clutter in the first few feet. You have echos from signals that have bounced off the bottom then off the surface and then back again..and again. It gets worse when you have a hard bottom. I’m a software developer and when I look at the raw unfiltered sonar signals in shallow water, I can appreciate how hard it would be to write code to find the bottom. There’s just a lot of noise from which the software has to find the real bottom. I think all units will sometimes get “confused” in shallow water. I think Humminbirds might be worse than others but none will be perfect in all conditions. Now, if you’re seeing this problem consistently at a depth of four feet, that’s pretty bad. You might try turning down the sensitivity and see if that helps. I’ve seen this happen on my Solix a few times. It doesn’t really bother me just like it doesn’t bother me that my unit doesn’t work at 30 MPH. When I’m fishing, I’m usually looking at 360 imaging and I tend to fish deeper water most of the time. That’s just the way I fish. If knowing the depth in shallow water is important in the way you fish then you might want to consider another brand.
