You ever eat a LMB that you catch?
Unless the laws have changed in Ca, black bass that are sold in markets or live tanks, must have a Fish and Wildlife tag attached to it until sold or cooked

The hook in this link is NOT a circle hook.

You keep reeling until you feel the weight of the fish and your rod starts to load. Your line should be tight, then lift and fight the fish. Like everything else, it will get better/easier with practice. Good luck

Learn how to reel set. When you get a bite, start reeling until you feel pressure and your rod starts to load. Then just lift the rod.

Airbrush?
i would get the Iwata Neo airbrush kit. It also comes with a mini compressor. Get a 40% off coupon online. Hobby Lobby also carries extra parts for the Neo https://www.hobbylobby.com/Crafts-Hobbies/Model-Kits/Airbrushes/Iwata-NEO-CN-Gravity-Feed-Airbrushing-Kit/p/80794884

Do people over complicate the ned rig?
One of my friends is a Zman fan boy. He buys the heads and the baits. I use a 1/16 oz ball head and the end of a homemade stick bait and don't see a difference in out catch rate. It's all in his head that he needs to buy the "good" stuff

Back winding spinning reels?
Reels have a drag for a reason. Everyone should learn how to use them

If you only can take one lure/bait and combo
The lake I fish is predominately spotted bass, occasional small mouth and largemouth. I use a Gloomis GLX 802C, extra fast tip, with a Daiwa Tatula Type R, spooled with 6 pond fluorocarbon. The bait would be a homemade stick bait. I can fish it with multiple techniques, from top to bottom of the water column.

Saltwater Safe?
I occasionally fish salt water and thoroughly rinse off all the gear with warm water as soon as possible. I haven't had any problems

I like inlines
If you plan on making a lot of spinners, I would suggest forgetting the pliers and get one of these. I use it to make inline spinners and they look just like the ones you buy. This tool is easy to use. https://www.jannsnetcraft.com/wire-forming-tools/421150.aspx

Is hair jig still popular?
I use them in the winter months here in Norcal. They work great on the spotted bass. I use 1/4oz jigs tied with hair from a gray squirrels tail. No need to use a trailer as the hair it tied a little longer than a normal jig.

Want to get into making soft plastics
You're going to need plastisol, molds, dyes, flake, injector, breathing mask, microwave, gloves, pyrex containers. The plastral and molds will be your biggest expenses. Molds are not cheap and working with just one for each bait will be time consuming. You could buy a lot of baits with the money it will take you to get started.

Advice on setting the hook with jigs?
I agree with Tom, I use a reel set. It's the same hook set when using dart/ball heads. The hook is exposed, there is no need to try to rip the fishes lips off. Plus, a reel set saves your back from getting beat up

Braid w/Drop Shot
The heavier weight will help, but I would be using straight fluorocarbon.

Favorite walking bait
Evergreen SB, both sizes

How many bass can live in smaller lakes/ponds?
I doubt a 2 acre pond is capable of supporting 100 bass, plus all the baitfish, but obviously I can be wrong. One way to find out is to tag the fish so you'll know if you're catching them over and over

Topwaters- does it get too cold?
Spotted bass will hit topwater baits year 'round. In one of the FLW events here, guys were catching spots while it was hailing
-
new whopper plopper
When the shad is really small, the spotted bass here in NorCal won't touch a normal size lure.
