I can't tell yellow from chartreuse most of the time. Hopefully the fish can't either.
  2. I haven't fished long enough to have a good opinion yet, but I'll try anyways Something light, something dark, something in the middle. I throw cranks a lot and in my area none of the colors I have tried outperform/underperform the others. I've caught bass with perch, craw red, and shad all within an hour from the same spot on the bank (because I lost them all one after another). Anyways, see first sentence above.
  3. Me too. Isn't a "regular" PFD required in a boat even if you have an inflatable one? I use a BPS PFD ($50) because the high-back jackets didn't look high enough for my seat. Plenty of arm room for casting and paddling and it doesn't ride up high when I'm sitting. Nice mesh areas for air flow. Pretty thin where needed. When my Pro-Angler Water Wings finally hit the market the self-inflatables will be little more than a forgotten relic
  4. Hey Glenn thanks for the video, interesting about finding warm water. I was going to ask if you sold those BassResource shirts and jerseys you wear in the videos, but instead I spent 30 seconds and found the "Gear" link at the top right of the site. So in case anyone else has never noticed, you can buy BR gear here, and it looks like you can customize it too.
  5. Went fishing Sunday with a friend. Set out to do some bank fishing. I had a back spasm after walking a 1.5 miles around the lake. Ended up on my back after about 10 casts. I was simply walking on almost flat ground when it hit. Didn't bend over or do anything - just instant pain. I do have back issues, not serious. My friend carried my backpack and I hobbled back. I'm lucky I was able to do so. That made me think a lot about getting injured. There are Mountain Lions out there, not a good place to spend the night. Spotty phone signal. I usually, but not always, tell someone where I'm going. I will now every time. I'll carry my kayak whistle I think, someone would hear me most places I fish. Maybe a mini air horn for animals. Dunno about that, but my friend carries one. And I should have stretched. Went straight from bed to the truck to the lake. Gotta be prepared. My back still hurts but it'll heal.
  6. I adjust mine on the fly if I can tell it's waaaay too loose, but it seems to me that relying on that tactic when you don't know the weight of the fish is asking for trouble. I guess with enough experience it could work, but I don't see the point really.
  7. I've learned to hold the fish just above the ground in case it comes off - shorter drop. I have a fish gripper but don't always have it with me.
  8. I watched a guy do that from the bank once on the Delta (not a bass boat). Dude comes screaming by then suddenly turns right towards me. I'm like what the...? Thought he was messing with me, but I think he saw the sandbar at the last second. Boom, stopped instantly. Then I heard a loud single expletive. He sat out there waiting for tide to change and I kept fishing, yelled back and forth a few times see if he was okay. He got out and dragged it around until another boat helped him. That one was a bass boat. You gotta know the delta and pay attention.
  9. I do think this discussion is on topic since the thread title is Left Vs Right Hand Reels Then again, the OP mentions nothing about it so, maybe not. I don't see much difference in the way a BC or spinner is reeled but maybe that's just me. I just tried it. I can use the arm, elbow, relax and just use the wrist. the above description doesn't seem to apply to me. Maybe I d o it wrong though, certainly possible. My spinning handles are a lot longer than BC, that's the only thing that makes a difference to me that I can tell. But maybe I'm weird, I've been "forced" to do things left handed at times. I use a PC mouse either hand with no problems, and I played guitar for years which may have helped develop the left hand. I played hockey lefty (which is not at all unusual for a righty) and played golf righty. For me holding the rod bothers my tendinitis, which is why I switched to lefty for the majority of my fishing. I do like to switch back and forth though. I'd buy a lefty or righty reel for BC just so I can switch maybe.
  10. If you lived in Cali you had the privalege of being able to watch the best fishing show ever made, and it was on public access TV to boot. The Fishmasters!
  11. How could a forum member make a buck if they aren't directly affiliated (being paid maybe?). I don't see the point unless you have stake in the company as there is no way to get a commission, say like you can with a Youtube channel sale. I guess they could try to post some kind of affiliate link here if that's possible, like the Youtube description links. That would be easy for a forum to filter though, if they cared to. I must be stupid, I do product reviews for nothing on my channel and I don't make money off the links should anyone use them. I'm too lazy to care. Anyways, yesterday I tried searching the web for landing nets. Once again I got sites like "BestNetForYou.com" with fake "top 10 lists" in broken English. "This net all big fun for you catch fishes in ease!" So the companies sell crap, then make fake fishing sites and landing pages with BS "top 10 lists". They got all their bases covered. The more I see of the world today the more I want to go fishing and be alone, and I mean that
  12. Been thinking about this question. I think for me, as a new bass fisherman (which I think is important), it's learning about bass behavior. I want to say time on the water, and I feel that will become more of a factor later, but I think educating myself off the water has helped more, especially since I don't know any good bass anglers to hang out with and learn from. Maybe like driving a car. You can tell who paid attention in Drivers Ed and who didn't as you cruise down the freeway. Many things involve learning the basics before you ever put them into practice. My friend has fished most of his life, fairly avidly though not primarily for bass, but I out fish him usually. He's the first to point it out. I learn quickly usually, and I've spent a lot of time here at BR, as well as Youtube and reading other articles. I have more in-depth (book)knowledge than he does. He has decades of time on the water. I pretty much am hooked on this bass fishing thing, so I learned a lot fast. I have a lot of time on my hands sometimes. I think that at some point though time on the water will be much more valuable. During the season I fish several times a week, so I do have a lot of time on the water too. Hmmmm oh well, that's what I think about it, at least for today.
  13. I don't get it either. I was gifted a right handed baitcaster (my only one so far) and I use that, but I don't understand why people prefer it if their right arm is dominant. I only use it that way because of tendinitis in my right arm, and I've never tried a lefty BC. I could use either I'm sure. I do it with spinners. I cast right handed with my spinning gear because left handed casting feels weird, but the reel is set to righty. I can cast lefty with it but I just don't. How complicated are most casting motions anyways? You may find you have better control with your off-hand as you won't try and power it so much.
  14. Thinking about hitting Disco Bay in the yak for a day soon. I've never fished it, will target stripers and black bass. Not sure what to expect except have a little fun.
  15. All I can think of in my short fishing career is leaving both of my rods at my fishing spot last summer. I walked back to my truck without them. I guess I was too impressed with the sunset. I jogged past two guys and breathlessly asked them not to pick up the grey backpack "in the tree back there" that I stashed so I could run. They're like, "huh?" Had to run all the way back before it got dark and the mountain lions came out to play. I once cast in front of someone I was trying to impress - a girl. I tied on a spinner bait and my knot failed or something and that sucker flew out into the lake. "I meant to do that." Good long cast without all that silly fishing line to slow it down! I've fallen down too many times to count. It's good for a laugh in my videos.
  16. My crankbaits are all Chinese, I'm almost positive, and two jerk baits are direct descendants of Genghis Khan.
  17. I love cranks! I use cranks from shore often, but it depends on the shoreline and how steep it is - and how snaggy! Sometimes you need to reel slowly as you get near shore. But then again, you want it banging off the bottom, so what's the difference? Crank it in if you can do so without snagging every time. Or wade in. I have a video of me reeling a crank along a shallow shoreline - nearly parallel - and I say, "There, it's hitting the bottom now I can feel it" and I catch a fish one second later about 5 feet off shore in maybe 1.5 feet of water. First time I think I ever really properly fished one off the bottom (I'm still a rookie). I've also caught fish with 3 different colored cranks from the same piece of shore within an hour. Not saying color doesn't matter, but it didn't then apparently Dang I can't wait to fish tomorrow, and I don't care where!
  18. Looks like a jerk bait! That's kinda what I thought it was until I read the page. Very cool, thanks for posting that.
  19. $6.29 for 25 wacky o-rings? Man and I thought Senkos were expensive! Bad reviews too, if you believe reviews
  20. Split-ring pliers from Texas Tackle, some trebles, and a sharpener. I kinda pulled a fast one on the Monkey and got stuff that will help me saaaave money. Pffft I hope. He already got me for the "Truck Emergency Kit" which was a BPS $20 telescopic spinner rod, a Pflueger Trion reel, and an $11 backback for it. Things I already had: some tackle from my barbless kit and some mixed plastics, a scale, pliers, and reading glasses (dude I keep reading glasses everywhere). It sits behind my seat waiting for me to spot some mysterious fishing hole somewhere. Was gonna add a first aid kit but I already got the pliers, so...
  21. I know nothing about it but I can post a picture, and say that it sure is strange! Edit to add video showing the lure action.
  22. Hey all, just briefly...and I hope this is okay... I just wanted to mention that the fishing video game thread was closed because it was pushing the forum rules about commercial threads. Just want to say that if I continue working on it and have anything to share that I would love to do so here. Of course I would speak with Glenn first and see if it's okay. Since I mentioned the game in this thread I thought it would be a good place to say this. Thanks to everyone for the feedback and thanks to Glenn for being cool and having the best bass forum on the web. And I mean that. It's the friendliest, it is very active, and it isn't ugly to look at (other than our avatars I mean). To get back on topic - I bought some stuff on Amazon but based on recommendations from this forum, not Amazon reviews, including a split-ring plier from Texas tackle, some trebles, and a sharpener (and a computer mouse). Took me only three baits to figure out a good "system" for replacing hooks. I used to to read here about "good split rings" and now I know what that means...ones that can survive the pliers!
  23. I only have one hobby so I don't mind the monkey - yet. I invite him over for beers sometimes. Thankfully he's a cheap-skate like me, but I'm starting to earn a little more money now. Maybe he won't notice
  24. Since restaurants were mentioned - I like my server to leave me alone unless I need something. If my server asks if everything is alright that usually means I'm in a lower quality establishment. If they ask me if I need my change as they pick up my payment - same thing. If they say "I'll be back with your change", better tip once I get it. This also gives me the option to say no, keep it. I sound like a snob but I rarely go to restaurants like that because I'm cheap
  25. Exactly, that's why I would never keep one. One reason anyways. There are a limited supply of trophy sized bass at any given time, and they are the ones kept. Nobody mounts the dinks. As far as mounting and displaying dead animals in general, well..... https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ab/92/8d/ab928d5cc4bf095a4b56f2150245c0df.png
