Lake question about google earth map
I cant tell. It looks like it could be rocks. It also kind of looks like weeds. You'll just have to check it out to know for sure. Its not a very big area. And you're definitely fishing those stumps! So check it out then.

Maribou jigs for Smallmouth
I dont mess with tying my own or custom jigs, but i by northland hair jigs and they work well. Its an old standard bait up here in new york. Smallies like them, and walleyes do too.

Any idea on weight?
Somewhere betwern 2 and 12. Its impossible to give an estimate from a pic. Thats why you always have scale or tape. You never know when you will catch a big one. And being able to know for sure is nice. I usually just measure them and have good idea of its weight based on that. Ill only weigh it if its really big.

Longest skunk streak?
I really dont think ive ever been skunked two trips in a row. 2 weeks ago i got skunked. My friend got 7 from the back of my boat that day! I couldnt remember tha last time i had been skunked before that. So i keep a fishing diary. Have been doing so since 1999. I looked back and found that my last time getting skunked was 11/30/2016. The last day of bass season here in ny. Bad way to end the year. I consider not catching my intended species a skunk. If im bass fishing and only catch a pike. I got skunked. Though my recent skunk was a total skunk. No fish at all. Im thinking about going through my notebooks to see how many days ive been skunked since i started writing down my trips. There are several books though!

Lake Ont Smallies Drop Shot Rod
I use a fenwick HMG medium for dropshot. Ive caught many 5 pounders on it. Also caught one over 6 on it in chaumont bay. It about a $125 rod. Not super expensive.

Headed to Black Lake NY
Dont know if its too late. I was thaere last saturday the 15th. We fished from around 5am until 11am. We got 8 bass with 2 of us. 3 of them were over 4lbs and several were 3-4. I hear a lot of people saying the fishing isnt good the last couple of years but i seem to get 'em. The key is to fish off shore there. Beating the banks al9ng with the other 200 boats out there any given day won't be very rewarding. There is a lot of offshore stuff to find there.

First tournament
Thats pretty much how i felt too. It is intimidating! Almost didnt fish the first one when i saw all those nice boats and dudes wearing jerseys! Glad i did though. Its a bit of a surprise really. Knowing we hold our own with those guys.

First tournament
Cool. I just did my first 2 tournaments in the last 2 weekends also. It is fun. The guys i fished with all fish the local B.A.S.S. trails and do open derbies on the off weeks that they organize themselves. The first one we showed up in my tracker and had the only boat that wasnt a big glass boat. It was a tough day but we ended up 4th without a limit. This really helped my confidence. I was so surprised how many teams didnt weigh any fish or didnt have limits. Second one was yesterday. We got 3rd and won our entry fee back. This one was on a 10hp restricted lake so not everybody showed up. But i got my 14 footer with an 8 horse out and we fished it. No graph, trolling motor barely worked, and had cooler livewell. Sill got some nice fish. It was on a lake i have fished on most of my life though. Like you though, we really had fun. The other anglers seem like cool people. Everybody hung out talking for awhile afterwards and i got caught up on who was leading the points and stuff because i wasnt there for the first 4 or 5 derbies.

Muskie attacks woman
We have 1 or 2 people s year get bit by muskies here in northern ny. A lot of times its people lounging in a boat or a dock with their feet or hands dangling in the water. A 12 year old kid got bitten badly a couple years ago while swimming.

When to move on?
I used to be on the move the whole time. Always wanting to hit that next spot. With experiance ive gotten to a point where i feel confident in my decision to fish a spot. I have a good idea where i will catch them before i launch the boat. Ive learned to eliminate spots for many reasons. So that in turn has got me to where i generally fish slower. I pick apart places that i think will be good thoroughly before moving on. On a side note, i have done some scuba diving. One thing that surprised me is the amount of bass that are in the water. They are all over the place. Its amazing. I now know for a fact that there are always bass in the likely spots. Our lures go by bass all day long and only a few of them decide to bite. This fact also contributed to me slowing down when i fish. The bass are there. No doubt about it. If you work an area enough, you will figure out what they want.

Is it true that after June Smallmouth move to 20-25 ft of water?
I dont fish shallow rivers so i cant really say, but you probably heard that from guys talking about lakes. Its very common to look that deep for smallies in lakes. Well, LM too for that matter. Several lakes near me would only leave you 10-20 feet from the shore to stay shallower than 20 feet.

What keeps me going...
I hear ya man. Im in northern ny. I love pulling eyes and perch through an 8" hole, but nothing beats getting out in the boat chasing crappies and bass.

You newer anglers need enthusiasm then experience
Maybe its because i grew up fishing walleye, pike, and muskie, but i dont think catching bass takes all that much patience. Even as a kid, i could always catch bass if i beat the bank early morning or late evenings. If a beginner is out at noon in july i can see them getting frustrated. Thats why i always figured bass make such wonderful sportfish. They arent hard to catch! The real challenge is catching big bass or learning how to catch them when conditions arent good. Learning to catch them consistently and learning to break down new places, thats the stuff that makes someone a good bass angler. But in the beginning, they are easy enough for anybody to find and catch under the right conditions.

Recommended Fish Finder - $1000 Budget
I have one of these at the console on my boat and really like it. Then i have a hook2 4 at the bow with just 2d. Got that for about $100. Pretty good set up for about $1000 total.

Black Laky NY Electronics Map
Are you zooming in on it and it still looks like that? If i zoom way out like that, it looks just like your image. But the closer i get, the more detailed it becomes. If you are just looking at the free version to check it out before buying, it isnt a good representation. Black lake is mapped out very well on navionics.

Help deciding on depthfinder
Me too. I had trouble with the hook 2. Had to do a hard reset several times every trip. The structure scan is much better on the elite ti2 qs well. Some people say the hook 2 has been good for them, but i had a bad experiance with it.

Lowrance Hook 12 series verse Elite 12 series
The quality of the DI and SI is much better on the elite ti2. I had a hook and replaced it with a elite ti2 and it is worlds better. Also, there are more settings that you can adjust on the ti2 to dial in your images. The hook you just sort of run it how it is. Its worth the extra money but if you already have the hook, it may not be worth it to replace it. The hook works, but the elite is just better. The hds is better yet. Next year something better will be out. Its a slippery slope! Also, the mapping is the same. I had a navionics card that came with the hook and just put it in the elite. It looks the same. The only real difference is the sonar plus on navionics. That is where the mapping updates based on real world use from navionics users. So the more people with navionics on a lake, the more accurate the maps will be. It uploads everybodys data and updates the maps. With the eliteti2, when i pull into the house, the unit automatically hooks to wifi and updates itself. With the hook i would have had to take the card out and put it in a computer. Of course i never did.

Elite ti2 9
I agree with taking it to the dealer. Pay for a brand new boat and you shouldnt have to ship anything anywhere. It looks like something is wrong with the unit or transducer. It looks like its mounted well.

Black Laky NY Electronics Map
Navionics has it mapped out in 1' increments. Im not sure if you can use navionics with hummingbird or not.

Weedline how to
It depends on many factors, just like everything with fishing. But ive gathered that you are asking about submerged weeds not surface weeds. I just zig zag across it with DI on putting a waypoint every time i cross over the edge where the weeds stop. This gives me a line to follow on my map. Then i will follow that line while watching Si and DI looking for any additional cover. Weedlines themselves are cover but if there is a rock, brushpile, a hole or hump, anything really, i will mark that with a waypoint as well. Its that simple. Now you have the weedline graphed out and you can fish it. As far as fishing it goes, there are a million tactics that you can use. If its not windy, i like t-rigs or dropshot. Fish it parallel with dropshot. Just keep dragging it along the edge. Texas rig i will throw it just into the weedline and work it out to deeper water. Thats where the rocks or additional cover comes in. Ill toss t-tigs at specific targets. If its windy i like crankbaits. Either fished parallel to the line or from shallower to deeper. I use lipless cranks a lot around weedlines if its windy. You can fish them deep, shallow, fast, slow, whatever you think will work. All that said, remember that you can use any d**n lure you want. Putting it in the right place is the important thing. Also, as far as graphing it goes. This is basically how you graph any offshore structure as well as points. Just rough it out with waypoints and then follow your waypoints to get a closer look.

partner too impatient for me to dropshot !
2 feet is not too far. I usually run a foot to 18 inches. If you use the actual "dropshot weights" you can quickly change the distance from weight to hook. If you have time to fish a wacky rig, you have time to fish a dropshot. I fish wacky rigs slower than dropshots. I also drag dropshots. Cast it, hold it for a bit, drag it closer, hold it, drag it. You get the idea. For some reason people think you have to just deadstick a dropshot. Thats not the case at all.

Giving props to our southern anglers!
Hottest day of the year here in northern ny. My truck thermometer and at 2 banks driving through town at 1:30 said 100. Stupid. Got a derby this weekend and im not going if its this hot.

Anyone ever seen a bluegill like this?
Man, i wish i could catch more big ones like the pics on here. Im in ny and just never see big bluegills anymore. I normally catch a few that are big enough to keep while crappie fishing, but rarely see anything like those beauties.

Fish ID
It looks like a rock bass, but wherever i have fished rock bass always have red eyes. Never seen one with black eyes.

Fishing St. Lawrence next week
The last time i was there was 2 weekends ago. I went to waddington. At the time the watsr temp was low 70's and they were still on beds. We got them on football jigs mostly. A shallow crank got a few. And opposing what someone else said, we got 5 or 6 on super spook junior topwater lures early in the morning. My fishing partner launched from chippawa bay monday night and was getting them on dropshots using strike king flat worms in the goby color. I basically never go to the river without dropshot gear and lipless cranks. I try using brown and green colors for worms. Trying to look like gobies. And i have a rat-l-trap that looks like a rock bass that gets hammered on the river. A friend of mines pb smallie. He hasnt chased smallies much.
