  1. My limited experience. Bass go temporarily insane when you throw crayfish any time.
  2. I think they're assuming that the general public is smarter than they are. Me? they pitch the ball, they hit the ball (or not) and the ump says strike or ball. What's to know? BB sort of stinks now anyway. Funny how football is still good with the canned cheering and all. Baseball is kind of boring for some reason. BB joke? What do you do with an elephant with three balls? Walk him and pitch to the rhino. Have a good day!
  3. Even though he just beat my team (Pats), right from the beginning when he came on the scene I made it a point to watch him just to see him throw a jump shot or a curve ball. Very impressive. If he stays well, and continues to mature he's gearing up to be the new goat down the road for sure.
  4. I spent last winter making fishing lures. Made lots of them. They drained the lake to fix the dam and this summer the fishing was sooo bad. I made more lures than I could use. I've broken out my old musical instrument wood stash from 40 years ago and I'm going to make an acoustic guitar. I used to make them years ago. Gonna do it again. A lure takes about three hours. The guitar will take about three weeks but I'll stretch it out a bit to be able to putter during the winter months..... I already sorted my wood....My purchase plans will revolve around this during the winter here in Maine. Fishing stops at this time.
  5. Yes, old movie with Clooney. Well made and popular when it came out about 20 years ago. Edge of the seat stuff. Great effects.
  6. Actually, admiration for the GaGA. She, like Miley Cyrus, Madonna, Jaylo, and a couple others run their music like a business. They maintain control, carefully meter their music releases, and as the get older they reinvent themselves. The branch into movies, some Oscar winners, and other areas. It's a business to them and they manage to stay clean and work the capitalist system to great success. Some may or may not like their music and/or 'look' but one thing is for sure, they are smart cookies in that they manage to stay viable from 18 to old age.
  7. I look at the sky, I look at the water, I often think... Yup, I think I'll go out for awhile. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not. I either enjoy the fishing, or sometimes just end up enjoying the ride. It's better than sitting looking at the walls and thinking about the water. It's always better than mowing the lawn. That can be a big motivator ?
  8. My wife lets me do what I want. "There's a sale on this pole hon." "Oh good, you gonna get it?" I've got that going for me and here I am... a minimalist. We both have 'lifetime licenses'. She usually goes along for the ride if the weather is good but never at 5 am.
  9. 2015 f150. Mid level model xlt. Didn't need heated seats. We're in Maine. I've come to love them... the wife really does. motorized back window... really don't use it. Digital dashboard info. It's good. I use it. Voice calling..."Call home". It works good. Backup camera and backup warning sensors. I'll never have a vehicle without them. I do like all the buttons on the steering wheel. I trust the computer to keep things running smoothly much more than I did the mechanical mechanisms that did that on older vehicles. The pedals rise up to meet your feet. I don't need tham but my five foot daughter could sure use them in a vehicle. And has anyone noticed that we all have push button starting. Even if you don't have a button, turn the key and let it go. The car starts itself. No cranking needed. It's just a start switch that's not a button. I like that. No gear clashing while starting like previous vehicles. That being said.... 80k miles. Parking brake cable is the only repairs beyond regular maintenance I've done on it. Aluminum body, Krown oil undercoating so no rust at all (Maine... salt too). Same brakes, same tires, pass inspection. My first Ford. I've had chevy's since 1973. I now realize that the repairs and rust I encountered all those years wasn't necessary. But as always with a car... fingers crossed. It's always a crap shoot.
  10. I'm partial to the Rocky Horror Picture show myself... ?
  11. I start off with.... will it float? (sorry, ?
  12. 1973 Chevelle deluxe. The deluxe meant 'stripped'. I ordered it new as a commuter car for college. 60 miles round trip a day for four years. It was standard, no power brakes or steering. Not even a radio. $2,400. I bought a radio from sears and put it in myself along with an 8 track player along with four sears shiny hubcaps. The straight 6 would wind up to a fairly high rpm. You'd gradually release the clutch and the car would start to creep forward. If you wanted to pass a car you'd need to drop it into 2nd and allow yourself a clear shot of several thousand feet to make it. Your best bet was don't try in the first place. But, It lasted several years. and finally rusted out at about 140k miles which was typical at the time for most vehicles. Similar in color and look as the one I found online below. First car, so I did love it and seeing it hauled off was a sad memory for me. I did hate getting underneath and replacing the muffler/pipes about every three years. Cutting them out and trying to retrofit a muffler kit, one size fits all if you like jigsaw puzzles. Anyone remember those times?
  13. I have managed to hook a 1 1/2 lb bass to my belly so that I couldn't get it out till I got home. The bass didn't make it. I almost didn't either. Nothing more frustrating than having a bass hanging from your belly (actually sort of overhang on mine) flopping around once and awhile with that big eye looking up at you. You can almost here him saying... "I don't understand?"
  14. The fury is their 'affordable' rod. It's okay. Move up to a Champion and there's a big difference. Pricy I know but it's a good rod.
  15. Using the method I describe.... basically #3. My casts with a 2.5" crank bait is 100-125 ft. I know this because the docks on my lake are positioned very close to 50 ft apart. I stand on mine, cast along the shore and ti's two docks or sometimes 2+ docks distant. I don't know if that's far or not but it seems to be a satisfactory distance to me. If I cast into a strong wind it goes much less than that, but without my thumb the reel compensates and the spool stays clean. I put a bullet weight on once, with no lure, and it went much, much further. I think the aerodynamics of it are what makes that happen.
  16. I've got a Dobyn's Champion 735cb Glass and absolutely love it. It cast nicely but it fights the fish really nicely even more. I fish a lot of crankbaits. I've also got a smaller Fury and it's very good but I keep it for lighter stuff that the 735 won't do well with. I'm kinda addicted to this rod actually.
  17. I've been casting my DC constantly for 2 yrs now. After I figured out how to set it I haven't had one backlash. I'm using 30 lb braid. Shimano's directions, the shaking spool tightening (1 and 2 pretty much) don't work well. I've written them about this and they've responded. Method three is the one... I've written about it here a few times. Put the brake on the number for the type of line. I use the 2 setting. Put the lure on and set the tension knob so that when you pull the trigger and shake it the lure drops a foot or two each time. Don't worry that it's not spinning enough for a long cast. The computer will let it loose for you when the time comes. Cast into the wind. Cast into the wind and hit a wall as hard as you can. Cast and close your eyes. Don't touch the spool with your thumb. You'd really have to work at it to get a nest. Sometimes I miss the trigger timing and my crankbait will smack hard on the water in front of me on a hard overhead cast. I've had a little fuzz but that's it. I never use my thumb, unless I want to stop a cast short, ever. And after training myself to cast thumbless (not easy), I've forgotten about it.
  18. What everyone else said.. I won't repeat it. But as a lure make I find that among other things like lure weight for the type of rod being used. I think a major component is the shape and location of weight. I've got some long slender lures that don't cast that far. I've got some narrow stubbier ones that cast like a bullet. I've found that narrow shorter lures with some weight towards the tail end will cast much farther than some other shapes. Sometimes I will use a lure just because of it's casting ability. Strange but true for me as I get satisfaction in lure casting. They usually are more controllable in the cast oo.
  19. Southern Maine in Acton on Mousam Lake. Just outside of Sanford. Been here all my life. I know the bottom of this 4.5 mile lake's edge because I've been fishing/snorkeling it since I was a kid many decades ago. That being said, I'm still working to pull fish out of this lake with mixed success.
  20. Mostly cranks and swim baits because I make 'em. Love the reel. I've got it on a Dobyns Champion 7.3 mhf glass.
  21. My experiences is that nine times out of ten... maybe 9.5 times out of 10, the people I deal with like this are either knowledgable or willing to help as best they can if they are not. I could make a big issue out of that rare occasion that I run into someone who shouldn't be in the position they are in, but if I did I'd sound like a person with anger issues or who is set off by every little thing and have to complain. Even with that person who does act stupid; hey, there are stupid people around. That's the way of things. So what, as long as I'm not.... uh... I hope not.
  22. You know, I don't know. The casting distance is as good or better than a thumbing reel. I think that if you set the line setting (2 for me with my braid) the tension knob sets the stopping tension (maybe?). When you cast, the electronics takes over the cast and loosens the tension during the cast and drops it to the tension you set at the end of the cast, slowing and stopping the spooling of the line. If you cast into a wall from may be 30 ft away, the reel stops pretty fast on it's own when you hit the wall. A really short, hard smack will make the spool fuzz up a bit. A good example of this is when I occasionally misjudge my cast with a heavier lure and pull the trigger to late. The lure smacks the water in front of me. No thumb on the spool, the spool stops before any more line is released. So, there I am with a big overhand swing to bomb a crankbait, About 10 feet of line spools out as the lure its the water but that's it. But, I really don't exactly know the science behind it. Someone mentioned that with poor technique you can still get a nest. I think that with the correct settings, a nest is not going to happen, even if I smack the water in front of me! The wrong settings, yes it will happen. But the setting is very easy to master. When I'm not in the boat, I go down to the dock and take several casts a few times a day. I ignore the reel, I ignore the wind, I ignore my thumb. I don't have any backlashes.
  23. set the brake to the line recommendation. Put the lure on and adjust the tension knob until the bait drops a foot at a time when you lightly shake it. I haven't had a nest in 2 years of heavy use on my Curado DC. I've managed to train my thumb to stay off the spool. Wasn't easy but I've done it.
  24. "what makes you think you're a good angler?" I don't. I kinda suck at it actually. I have a lot of fun on the water. Nice sunrises, smooth water trolling rides, etc. Sometimes the wife comes along and reads. But a good angler? A work in progress and not much progress at that. I'm 66. Actually, I'm just in a funk this summer. Last year I caught enough fish we could have lived off of them had I kept any. This year it's just the opposite. We'd have starved to death by now. They lowered the lake to rebuild the dam last fall. Baaaaddd year. But, like I said above. I am having fun anyway.
  25. I've got two 100ah batteries connected and I can go up to 5-6 hours. But , it depends also on other factors. i.e. They'll make an electric truck soon. Great idea, but if you tow a trailer the time to discharge dramatically reduces. So, if you're going against the wind or have a heavier boat it won't last as long.
