  1. With all the free time, when's the book coming out?
  2. I never rinse the entire reel unless its used in the salt. And not dont put oil in that hole. If you do it will thin out the grease on the gears and make a mess.
  3. The hole is to drain water. For regular in season maintenance wipe the outside down with a soft cloth, clean level wind with q tip and add oil to level wind. Also take out spool and add oil to spool bearings and clean spool edges and the edges on the frame it rides on. After season, take the reel completely apart. The video below is a good one to follow. I personally use Cals tan grease on drag and gears, yamalube on all sliding parts and on pinion bearing, and TSI 321 on the rest of the bearings and the levelwind.
  4. I predict that by the year 2022 the term "googan" will primarily be used as an insult
  5. IMO torque doesn't really come into play until you get to the 20ft range or if you are using big spinnerbaits. If you haven't fished a 5 speed reel, try it out. I was like you, and based on internet reading had determined that I didn't need a 5 speed reel. Well my mind changed quickly as soon as a fished one. One of the things no one seems to mention is the difference in feel that you get with a lower gear ratio. To me this is significant enough to make the change.
  6. I fish from shore primarily as well and one thing to keep in mind is the amount of line you're going to have out. I know it sounds like common sense, but few things are more frustrating than getting the distance you want, feeling the bite and feeling way undergunned when you go to set the hook.
  7. I've had good luck throwing LC 1.5 Silent squarebills in all colors in clear water (6ft or so of visibility). I sometimes add marabou and Krystal flash to the tail treble.
  8. How long are you waiting to set the hook? When I fish a trick worm im using 6 or 4lb test line and fine wire hooks. Tap ... tap hookset. If I wait until the line is moving one of two things will happen. A. I'll miss the fish B. I'll gut hook the fish
  9. ^ this plus a leader knot frequently passing through may do it
  10. YZH 10#. While 12# isn't overkill, the 10# will be an all around better line for what you are describing.
  11. Hmm never heard of this and I've seen his videos before. I believe it is a degreaser but I personally wouldn't add anything besides oil on those bearings.
  12. Oil the brake drum as instructed on the yellow sheet they include with the reel. "I" series Shimanos are notorious for this brake noise.
  13. Hmmm maybe thats why I aint catching fish ... haunted fishin rod
  14. Thats the method I used and it worked fine. Unless you really bend the eye out, it shouldn't weaken it much.
  15. I fish a American Rodsmiths rod that claims to be MH/F but fishes more like a Med/Mod. Its been great for inline spinners ... honestly though its hard to fish a dressed #3 yellow dot black fury wrong.
  16. Wrap your shirt around your hand then wrap the line around that and take a couple of steps back. The line should break at the knot with minimal line loss.
  17. Fiberglass will break in for sure and this seems especially noticeable with fly rods. Can't say I've felt break in on graphite rods ...
  18. Bass Edge's The Edge on TuneIn radio is decent. I may be bias because I received a DVD set since my question got featured ?
  19. If he doesn't I'm fairly certain I have one as well so let me know
  20. Looks like a clinch. I personally moved from that to the Trilene knot where the line is doubled through the eye ... although i primarily use palomar whenever possible and fish n fool for braid
  21. Go get a copy of Wii sports ... the Wii fishing game got the feeling of a bite down pretty well.
  22. Good advice ... this would mainly apply to the first cleaning and subsequent annual cleanings. Once the factory grease is cleaned out, adding oil is sufficient until annual maintenance. To answer the OP only my spool bearings have oil and they get re-oiled with TSI 321 about every 2 months or so. I fish about as often as you do. All other bearings have grease and it gets replaced yearly.
  23. Buy them both. Even if you decide to resell them youll come out way ahead.
  24. I imagine this may come into play with magnetic brakes where the brake is affecting the spool to some degree regardless of spool speed, but I cant see it making a difference with centrifugal brakes.
  25. Try to temper your enthusiasm. I may be alone here but this book was a bit of a let down for me. Much of it read like a biology book about sunfish with bits and pieces related specifically to bass and bass fishing. There were some interesting sections for sure but certain things such as 20 pages dedicated to whether or not bass feel pain didnt provide particularly useful information.
