  1. Oh meteorologists ....what a ridiculous job. The only job where you an be wrong 100% of the time and that's perfectly acceptable. Ok we are gonna get 4-6, oh we already have over 6 ok well then it'll be 6-12....oh now its over 12.....well lets say up to 18......oh it stopped at 15, see I said it would be less than 18. What a joke. That's like betting on a football game after its been played....you can't change your predictions after it happens and say your right.
  2. I remember when I was in 8th grade we were living outside of Houston and we had ice followed by a few inches of snow and below freezing temps for several days. They cancelled school for an entire week because there was no equipment to clear the roads and the bus drivers weren't experienced driving in those conditions. Of course as a 13yo boy I was ecstatic to miss school and play video games all day. My mom was stay at home at the time and she grew up in Iowa so we went all over the place.....movies, out to eat, my buddies house.
  3. We have had close to 20in of snow since last Monday and now we have serious north winds creating hellacious drifting. Wind chill overnight is supposed to get down to -42.
  4. My local Bomgaars already has snowblowers and shovels marked down. Don't normally see that til late February \early March.
  5. So sorry for your losses. Been a real tough go for you man. Hang in there buddy, stay strong.
  6. Yep...same here. Been in Iowa for 23 winters...never seen anything like this.
  7. Agreed the luxardos are incredible and the gold standard for a reason, however they are incredibly expensive. Honestly for home use though you can make an old fashioned even with a Luxardo or two in it for a fraction of what one will cost in a bar. If you are budget minded I've found that Wal mart carries a Best Value premium cocktail cherry...their store brand...they are nowhere near luxardo quality but are decent and also under $5 a jar as opposed to $20-$25.
  8. I'm mostly bourbon and rye with a couple scotches and a couple Irish...I'm guessing I'm at 35ish bottles myself. That's just for me...my lady isn't into whiskey. I don't question her book spending, she doesn't question my whiskey spending. Its a nice understanding we have come to.
  9. Just out of curiosity and so I know when to stop, what qualities as way too much bourbon? Also thanks for the reminder, I like a whiskey sour from time to time
  10. I recently picked up a bottle of OGD Bonded and I was underwhelmed after all the praise I've seen it receive. Which was surprising because I usually like Beam stuff like I said. Maybe it will grow on me.
  11. Tonight its Redbreast 12 and a Tarantino movie---fine way to wrap up the day.
  12. Im liking some beam products lately...namely the single barrel and Knob creek 9.
  13. Most of my bourbon and rye consumption is either neat in a glencairn or over 1 big ice cube in a rocks glass. But lately I've really been enjoying cocktails...in particular old fashioneds, think I've finally got the recipe right for me. What is your favorite bourbon or rye cocktail?
  14. May have to give the 114 a shot sometime. That said for the same-ish price around me I've been super impressed with the knob 9.
  15. Recently picked up a bottle of OGD bonded because I had it recommended several times but was unimpressed. I don't mind the beam profile, in fact I like knob creek 9 and my Jim Beam single barrel, but the OGD BIB didn't hit right--maybe it will grow on me. Have heard the 114 is much better, what do you think of it? Oooh fancy! 47 and catfishing with glass bottle high life, I like your style.
  16. Echo what everybody else has said, hope they find a solution and you get on the road to recovery.
  17. I appreciate your understanding on this...I find that I get alot of snarky comments from people older than me on my feelings\apprehension towards marriage. I'm not sure of your age be seeing as you've been marries 18 years longer than I've been alive its great to see an elder statesmen understand where I'm coming from. Like I said I'm not anti marriage just not sure the juice is worth the squeeze. In fact my best friend stopped by for supper last night and said his wife just filed for divorce. This will be his 2nd.
  18. This more closely resembles my relationship. We aren't married but have been together 12 years this past July. Neither of us are anti marriage, but being surrounded by divorce has both of us hesitant . Also let me state we have no kids, its just us two, so that has factored into it.
  19. Agreed...the makers 46 cask strength is delicious. Picked one up about a month ago and I'm really enjoying it.
  20. Happy Thanksgiving all! sorry for your troubles buddy
  21. Like @TnRiver46 I'm a long ways off, just turned 40 this year so even if it goes perfect I'm at least 20ish years off. That said I plan to do my job until I'm gone. I do work with 1 individual who hasn't done a single thing to completion in the 7+ years I've been around him, maybe he thinks he's already retired.
  22. Only buffalo trace stuff I can regularly get around here is the plain old BT. I've got a buddy that's got a hookup for Blantons and Eagle rare...but the ER is like $70 and the Blanton is over $100---neither are worth it to me. I've seen the bowman stuff around and heard good things but have never tried any, may have to give it a shot.
  23. Well I've been on a buying rampage the past few months, I now have a very respectable bourbon and rye collection. Got a nice profit sharing check Friday, so yesterday me and the missus ran up to the city and did a little bottle hunting. She's not into whiskey, but she does enjoy helping track down the bottles. Ended up hitting two stores and finding different bottles I've been looking for..two ryes and two bourbons. Evan Williams 1783: $25--90 proof-- I've not been a huge fan of Evan Williams but heard this is much improved over the black label and BIB(which is decent itself). For the price I'm impressed. Much more going on and a better mouthfeel. Middle west dark pumpernickel rye cask strength: normally $69--124.1 proof--store pick on sale for $55. I've wanted to pick up the base model 96 proofer for a while, but the store I was in had cask strength single barrel store picks for only $8 more so I went that route. This is unique amongst the ryes I've had..has some of the typical black pepper, citrus, mint bright notes but also has legitimate pumpernickel dark savory type notes on the back end. This is very interesting and I'm excited to get into the bottle and see what develops. Jack Daniels SBBP rye:$60--128.3proof-- I've heard this was gonna be a regular shelfer but until today I hadn't seen it. Well the bigger store I was in had a full 2 rows on a shelf plus a double case stack on an end cap. I've liked the bonded rye quite a bit and the BP didn't disappoint, similar flavor profile but the tastes and mouthfeel\viscosity have been turned up to 11. This was a safe bet as I knew I'd like it, and I wasn't disappointed. Makers Mark 46 cask strength: $65--110.1 proof-- last but definitely not least, this is the only bottle I had settled on buying before even going. Now I don't mind the standard Makers offering, but the french oak stave aging and extra proof really do work wonders on this stuff. On the nose I get a big hit of dark raspberry jam and vanilla custard. The pallet delivers a big dose of that sweetness with a nice savory spice of barrel char. This is the only bottle I had to track down by hitting a second store, but I'm very happy I did. All in all I had a very successful bottle hunt and I'm very happy with all my purchases. Now for the sake of my relationship I better pump the brakes for a bit on the whiskey spending! Only bottle I'd pull the trigger on right now is an ECBP C 923 but with the hype surrounding it I'm more likely to find a Stagg at this point. In the past month or so I've seen this bottle in at least 3 or 4 stores at MSRP, around $25-$30. I just watched a YouTube video the other day and saw a guy hunting bourbon, he pointed out the store he was in had a double case stack plus like 4 shelf rows of BT for regular price. From what I could see that particular store had approx 150 bottles, although m not sure what state this was in. Some states are strange on what they consider allocated or how they distribute thru the state. That said I honestly like Elijah Craig small batch as well or maybe even better, and the price is very similar both hanging like I said in that $25-$30ish range.
