  1. Before I got a MH/MF rod, I fished crankbaits and jerkbaits on a MH/F. Caught bass, too. I eased up on the hookset with crankbaits and did more of a “sweep-sweep” with jerkbaits than the standard way of working a jerkbait, but it will catch bass. Is a MH/MF better for those applications? Certainly. Just as a MH/F is better than a M/F for Texas rigs. But I’ve used both and caught bass with both as well. Of course, a lot of that depends on the rod. One’s MH/F is more akin to a M/F, while another’s may be stiffer and almost like a H/F.
  2. In all honesty (and IMO), a bass angler with a MH/F baitcaster and a M/F spinning rig can fish just about anything within reason. It is nice to have rigs for special applications, but it is not a necessity. No matter what that damned Bait Monkey says!
  3. I haven’t had much luck with 5” Senkos lately. But they’ve been hitting the 4”.
  4. A Mann’s 9” Jelly Worm in Blackberry is a go-to staple. This bass hit it as soon as it hit the water.
  5. I like Jersey Mike’s. Their #13 The Original Italian is pretty good. But the cheesesteak pales in comparison to a great cheesesteak from any decent hoagie or sub shop in eastern PA, DE, NJ or MD. Maybe if you only had the tourist trap Pat’s or Geno’s could I even come close to agreeing with you. It’s not even close. That’s comparable to saying a “Maryland-style” crabcake from Long John Silvers in better than any crabcake in Baltimore. ?
  6. I forgot. Anything by Peter Capstick. Especially Death in the Long Grass; Death in the Silent Places; and Death in the Dark Continent. The Maneaters of Tsavo by John Henry Patterson. The Man-Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag by Col. Jim Corbett.
  7. Graduated in ‘78. That was the first year we had a computer class in school (I did not take it lol). But being in the aviation maintenance field, there was no “I hate technology and will remain a Luddite”. Today’s aircraft (starting in the 90s) are basically a flying computer. And being in management since 1993, having to learn how to use a PC efficiently, and create documents, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, etc. came with the territory. Had a Blackberry until the iPhone came out and we all got one. It’s got its plusses and minuses for sure.
  8. That’s a cool story. Looks like he can catch some good bass, too!
  9. I catch more bass on topwaters in early morning without question. But looking back, I’ve probably had better catches between 10:00-1:00 than any other time of day. Time stamps on phone pics tell the tale.
  10. Senko #956. That’s my go-to.
  11. Two years ago was when I started fishing again after a 25+ hiatus. We moved to Texas and there is a decent-sized pond in my community. All my rigs were 40 years old or older. I cleaned and lubed the reels, spooled on some new line and went fishing. I was always a live bait angler so I was fishing with nightcrawlers. One rig was a Cabela’s UL spinning rod with a Shakespeare 2052 reel. I had an Eagle Claw snelled #6 baitkeeper hook with 1/2 a nightcrawler under a bobber looking for bluegills. I casted it out and it landed about 5’-6’ farther than I wanted. I cranked the handle to close the bail and reeled it in a bit. The bobber jiggled once and went under. I set the hook and the rod bent almost in half. I knew it was something big, but wasn’t sure what (there are some big cats in this pond). Fought the fish for minutes before I landed it. It was a LMB between 6 and 7 lbs (estimated due to no scale). That’s the day I started upgrading all my gear and started fishing with lures lol. This was my PB by over 4-5 lbs.
  12. Today’s been a crappy day. Found out my younger daughter’s fiancé tested positive for COVID and she’s not feeling well (although she tested negative). They live in my older daughter’s home, so our trip to see them on Christmas just got cancelled. Thanks for a great post and spreading some cheer!
  13. Nice chatting with you on the phone today. I hope you catch some nice bass with one of those baits. Or all of them!
  14. Good luck on the buck.
  15. Bass fishing and military names. Hmmm…. Bomb cast Bullet weight Pistol grip Missile Baits Heddon Torpedo Bomber Baits Yeah, I can see it!
  16. Getting older is not something most look forward to. But it beats the hell out of the alternative!
  17. I waited a lo-o-o-ng time to get a good shot on a nice buck with my bow for a shoulder mount. One year I arrowed a real pretty four pointer and got it mounted. Turned out great. The next year I arrowed a nice 8. So you may have something there!
  18. I got nuthin’. Forecast kept saying rain. Starting at 6:00, then 8:00, then 10:00. So I gave it a shot. Got the boat in the water at 8:45. 8:47 it started to rain. Oh, well. 65° and no wind…I’m fishin’! And I did. Got wet. Had one bite on a X-Zone Adrenaline Craw and…bam!!! No, not a big bass. Lightning! I decided discretion was the better part of valor and packed up posthaste. So, no fish. But I did meet a fellow angler who seems as serious as me and we exchanged numbers and hope to fish together soon, so all-in-all, not bad. Came home and made sugar cookies with my wife. Life is good.

Mmmm…I got a hankerin’ for ghoti and chips!
  20. In deer hunting, we say “you can’t kill ‘em from the couch”. Especially when the weather isn’t what we’d have liked. Same applies to fishing.
  21. I use Gamakatsu 1/0 circle octopus hooks with an O-ring.
  22. There’s logic in that. It’s just I’ve never had luck on the retrieve until lately.
  23. Baitcasting H/F 7’ 6” MH/F 7’ MH/MF 7’ Spinning M/F 6’ 6” M or ML/XF 6’ 6”
