Need recommendation for 1st baitcast setup for 14 year old
My grandson is new to fishing, has gone out a couple times with a spinning setup and would like to try a baitcaster. I can't help much other then buying it as I've never gotten the hang of it with the one I have. Looking to spend under $200 if possible, don't want junk. Needs to be general purpose freshwater, probably smallies and LM as primary targets. I found a couple old threads, but for younger kids.

Hotels. Hate them!!!!
I've done too many hotels, always have trouble sleeping the first night, not too bad after that if it's a decent place. When it's for vacation I rent a home.

Progressive polarized sunglasses??
Being expensive, I use my progressive polarized shades for years. The last time I had Transition lenses, many years ago, they turned yellow eventually. I took a look after seeing your post about them being available in progressives, this is what I found. "Most Transition lenses wear out in about three years, with a yellowish tinge forming in the lenses while clear and a noticeable reduction of the lenses' darkness in full sunlight" Just something to be aware of. It may or may not pertain to what you are thinking about.

Time Of Day
Just the opposite here, I'm a morning person, the grandkids not so much. I normally fish south of Lee but wouldn't mind somewhere north of there on occasion. My big thing is I do not fish where the pleasure power boaters roam in the summer.

Fishing, boats, line, reels ect.
With a spinning reel... I use braid on 5 of 6 rods, I use spinning equipment 95% of the time. I don't think I've ever dealt with a twisted mess, occasionally it get wrapped around the tip of the rod, but not from line twist. I do get line twist with mono, a lot. I think it may be something other then the spinning reel, or maybe they were/are really crappy reels.

Time Of Day
I'm under the impression the best time of day for LM in the summer is night time. As it's rare I get out then, not being much of a night person, I usually try to be on the water at dawn or dusk, so much so I can't remember the last time I went out in the middle of the day. So the question is, am I right in my assumptions for one that can get out anytime one wants or is the middle of a sunny day worth the time. As I'm in New England day time heat wouldn't stop me as opposed to those in the deep south.

making my kayak seat more comfy.
Not exactly the same thing, mine being a canoe, but I use a seat cushion, one of the Purple ones, you can get different thicknesses.

Home repairs. I wish I had more knowledge in the matter.
I added 700 sq' to the house DIY, in my 40's, no way would I think about it now in my mid 60's.

what is your pocketknife?
I carried a Victorinox Tinker for all my working years, yes, an old stick in the mud Swiss Army Knife. That model cause it has a Philips head. Think I have a half dozen of them here and there, many were sent back for repair under the lifetime warranty, all when the plastic covers fell off, although you get a new one back instead of them actually doing a repair. I still carry one when I need to, but not constantly like I used to. I do carry one of the baby ones on my key chain. Most used features, main blade, and the tooth pick.

A lot of DIY is having the confidence to try.

Starting a garden
We were just talking about this today. We study and find the best varieties of vegetables, shrubs, and even trees for our location, then we can find none of them to buy and get stuck with something else. Most of what we get here in western Ma comes from the south or west. What is grown locally is whatever is popular, not best suited.

Starting a garden
That is my experience. Between the costs of the plants and the cost of sprays and such, you do not save $. It's a hobby, like fishing, you have to enjoy it and getting the freshest veggies one can get.

Starting a garden
Ours is covered with clear plastic this year, my wife got sick of the weeds so we figured we give this a shot.

Starting a garden
Plenty of time this year if you get going on it. We'll be putting in our 2nd crop of all the beans. Can get in a 2nd planting of peas too. We dig out the grass, shaking off all the dirt. A lot of work, but it does the trick. You can hire someone to till. If you have a truck get a load of either compost or the top soil/compost mix, which is what I use as it's ready to go as soon as it's tilled in. A pitch fork works in lieu of a tiller, you do need a dirt rake of some sort. And expect to deal with bugs and such next year or the one after. Sending a soil sample to the county extension service is worth the trouble, if you have such.

Water treatment plant
I thought we were talking a waste water plant, as opposed to a drinking water treatment plant. My post a while back was in reference to a WW plant.

Any Pelican Bass Raider Owners Out There?
My boat is in the truck bed if it makes a difference, the battery in the back of the boat, I keep it in place with a bungee cord while traveling. I have had it tip over, which being lithium, is not a problem. Do you have anything on the floor? I have 3/4" foam, which is cut to let the battery sit on the plastic floor and helps hold it in place. I was thinking of picking up some of these tie down loops which might work too.

How Many Rods Should I Carry?
From a canoe... usually 3 rods, all spinning. early season, L, ML, M. The Light is the most fun, can use it until the weeds get too thick. One of each cause I only own 1 L, and 1 ML. Once the weeds get to the surface I change to 2 M, and 1 MH. Other then a MH baitcast rod that I don't use, those are my 3 heaviest. All between 6' and 7', and all fast, reels from 1000 thru 3000. If I take out the #9 fly rod, it's the only rod on the boat.

Water treatment plant
There is one that dumps out in the CT river in Springield Ma, this is from an article on it, name deleted. "----- is in charge of a facility that sees 35 million gallons of wastewater pass through each day, with every drop going through an involved process of physical, biological and chemical treatment to make it safe to be sent into the Connecticut River." I'm guessing yours is the same. FWIW, I see boats out in the area fishing a lot.

Frustration on the Range. Golf.
During the week is/was the only times I would hit the range. I'd also go to the grass area as opposed to the rubber tees. Most folks on the grass are there to practice as opposed to the mats where you get folks just out to have fun. Always had the practice bunkers to myself too. Gave it up as the joints deteriorated.
