  1. Around here if you want to avoid the wind, which being in a canoe I do, you need to be off the water before noon. Here's the 10 day wind forecast.
  2. Not quite the same, but some of the breakwaters I fish off for stripers are very slick especially in the dark. As I got older I felt less sure of myself, even with spiked wading boots. I picked up a Mustang auto inflatable to use for this 7 years ago, hopefully it never has a reason to fire off. Can't say I'm crazy about the look, thankfully there aren't many out in the dark. I use it in the canoe in the summer too.
  3. 14' solo canoe. I use an anchor, sometimes 2. They are 1.5" pvc filled with bird shot, cement would probably work too. 1 is 6", 1 is 9". After losing 2 mushrooms to the stumps I went this route a few years ago. You do drift a bit with just 1 in a stiff breeze, hence the 2nd. I put in anchor cleats, 2 forward, and 2 to the rear but within reach, I use whichever one the wind suggests. Tried the anchor pole with the same results you did. The same homemade pole works fine in the Bass Raider so I'm guessing one just doesn't get enough downward force when in the canoe.
  4. Comparing what 12ponudbass and Bass302 found, the Mangrove has peach pants whereas the Yellow Billed has white. looks like it's the Yellow Billed, which has the whole east coast as it's habitat.
  5. I wish, the plastic material is quite thin on a Bass Raider, without backing of some sort I wouldn't trust screws to hold, and I'm not taking the boat apart.
  6. What do they consider morning? We had good luck when we went left early, like 4 or 5 am. If the boat leaves at 8am then I see little difference, morning or afternoon. If you and your crew want to sit around the boat in the sun sucking down some brews, afternoon would be best. When I go for stripers from shore very early am and full dark in the evenings works best. Bit that's from shore. If the Capt has much experience, ask his opinion. Smaller charters can be very hard to book this late in the season, most of the best times are booked up to a year ahead. Kind of like shore cottage rentals. The better the Capt, the harder they are to book.
  7. Thanks, it's worth a try.
  8. FWIW, the Dolphin is lighter, longer, wider, and is a jon boat. The Raider has a bit more capacity, users sit up a bit higher, and is a pontoon style boat. Can you mount cushioned boat seats in a Dolphin? I wouldn't want to sit on the bench all day, but that's just me.
  9. I picked up a Bass Raider this past winter, retired 65 yo. I manage to get it in the bed of my F150, but getting the leading edge in isn't easy, especially on an angled boat ramp. If they'd put a couple more handles on the thing it'd be a lot easier, there is nothing to hold onto. They do work well though.
  10. Are you talking something like the Sun dolphin? If so, and you don't get much info here, there's a Facebook page that includes Sun Dolphin owners. You'll have to do a search on Sun Dolphin and join to ask Q's.
  11. Not a day of work done by this one. On 2nd thought, she did locate a dead mouse inside the closet wall for me one time.
  12. I like fishing in the rain and go out of my way to do so, however, I have not had much luck in a heavy rain. I have had the bite turn on strong right after the heavy stuff, like as soon as the rain stops.
  13. For us it's a combination of inflation, gas, and the market downturn. We're retired living off our 401k till SS kicks in. Holding off on making winter travel plans, which includes driving to FL, till we see how it goes. Any vacation reservations will be last minute, more or less.
  14. Just a guess as I've not been in either, but the Catch being 4" wider should be more stable. 30.5" vs 34". If I wanted to stand in a yak I'd want the wider. In general, a narrower boat will paddle better then a wider one, at the cost of stability. Both are 10' so I'd expect about the same for tracking.
  15. Thanks, they just happen to be on sale!
  16. I think it's more cause we've gotten older.
  17. Remember This one? Remember This one?
  18. Flip flops would work at some put ins, and get stuck in the muck at others. I need something that will stay on the feet, drain and dry quickly, and also have soles that give some protection from rocks. SO far it looks like water shoes or some sort of Crocs/sandals. Going to look at some today, thanks all.
  19. If he was not moving I don't see why you couldn't pass him. If he was moving I might just sit in one spot for a while and fish and let him get farther away before moving, but that's just me.
  20. I'm another who has yet to get 2 uses out of a tube of SG. My brother gave me a big bottle, something like 4 oz, that comes with activator spray to use in woodworking. I refuse to open it cause I know it's just going to turn into a rock after 1 use. I did try it once on a couple knots, no problem with or without.
  21. I like the look of the Croc's, but if they are like my old Teva's were, the leather is going to stay wet for a good while, I'd prefer something that dries quickly.
  22. I wrote above that I didn't care for the split grip, yesterday my grandson and I went out on a Bass Raider, in close quarters the split grip I had along worked great. I got much greater distance with minimal movement. After this experience I think I'm going to pickup a Victory or similar as the cheap split I have has no sensitivity to it, it'll be my Raider Rod.
  23. Do water shoes have enough sole to walk on trap rock? The state uses it here and there.
  24. Never correlated it to a water temp, but my biggest have been early fall, Sept and Oct. I always took it that they had all summer to fatten up by the time I caught them.
