I think I would enjoy this. I love to treasure hunt.

Honestly guys once you get past the initial investment of a machine its a really low cost hobby. Compared to hunting or fishing, where I spend give or take $500 every year (Not counting new guns/boats). Batteries are about the only expense (alot of machines now have rechargeable ones). You can also save by going used.

It's a blast, no doubt. Me and a buddy have been going at it pretty hard on some civil war sites lately. My family owns some land where the rebel army camped for a few days waiting on supplies. My grandfather wasn't the best groundskeeper, lol. So we're having to work through alot of junk, but the finds are coming slowly.

What's a halfway decent machine you would recommend for a beginner run? My dad has wanted to get into this for a while. We live in an old farmhouse and he's convinced that if he digs around where the outhouse used to be, he'll find old coins that fell out of people's pockets and down the hole while they were having their morning constitutional.

He's onto something ROC. The area where the clothes line was is another good house site spot for coins.

For a brand new machine, you need to spend $450-500+ to get a quality, deep machine. Once you get above 500-600 the difference is bells and whistles that arent always needed. You basically need a good, deep machine that has discrimination (can ignore certain metals of your choosing, like aluminum pull tabs) and target ID (tells you whats giving you the signal). You can find deals on used on that site where craig lists things.

A few good manufacturers are White's, Fisher, Minelab, and Nautillus.

I'm bumping this five year old post . Yes I love metal detecting . Been doing it since 1980 .   I found this today .

I do it on occasion. It's pretty fun.

Never did.  But after watching The Detectorists on Netflix, I've been tempted

I did it for about ten years. I’ve got quite the collection of civil war stuff. It’s a great winter hobby. Finding new places to hunt can be challenging.

1940s toy fire truck found next to my parents driveway last week. 4 inches down in a fire ant nest!

Man, Id love to do that. My BIL in richmond has found lots of cool stuff. He gave me some minie balls and buttons he found.

Found this yesterday dont know how old it is. Found about 6 inches down in the woods where a farm used to be.

You should be beach combing after the hurricanes!

Lots of history in north Florida. Search old maps for homesteads, road crossings, railroad stops, bridges, campsites. 

I hit a hot spot a few years back and so far have pulled over a hundred old coins from the area . Heres a thread on a detecting forum from the first  few trips there in that valley .

Bought my friend a metal detector for Christmas some years back.  Mistake.  He found an old rusty dog collar and kept it.  He's more hoarder than I realized.

I think it would be cool to start diving. Some people on youtube always seem to find nice stuff!

You never see the guys that don't find stuff on youtube.

I just got interested in a different form of metal detecting. People are calling it magnet fishing.

 

Essentially, a heavy duty magnet attached to a rope and tossing it by bridges or busy areas dragging on bottom to see what you find.

 

Watched some YouTube videos on it and seen people pull out big safes with the backs cut out, guns, historic swords, lots of keys. 

 

Just rigged up my magnet, anxious to try it.

Heres an interesting find I made last year . Its a Lee Arms Company Red Jacket 32 cal rimfire Circa 1870's - 1880's .
