Jerkbait And Squarebill Rod

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a squarebill/jerkbait rod and I've asked a few time but have only gotten brands and I was just wondering what you guys would recommend length and taper? I was thinking about 7'0" moderate fast, medium power? Thanks

I like a shorter rod for jerkbaits and a slightly longer rod for square bills and lipless cranks. If I had to get one rod to cover both, I'd go with a 7' MH-moderate rod.

Without going into a brand name war, you are spot on about what you should be using.

Ideal length to cover both with one stick for me would be 6'9. Kistler has a 6'9 Klx crank rip twitch rod that I use. Works great

Talking square bills…I like a moderate rod for rocks, docks, and wood. For weeds, I like a fast rod. Same goes for traps.

For jerk baits, I use a shorter rod, with a short rear grip. Medium power, x-fast taper gives me the control I want. I use the same rod for spook type baits as well. Also makes a great sniper style spinnerbait stick.

Personally, what I'm looking for in a cranking rod versus what I'm looking for in a jerkbait rod are two very different things.

If I was going to try to use one for both the rod you described would probably be about where I'd end up. It will be a better cranking rod than a jerkbait rod but since I fish cranks longer than I do jerks it would make sense to get one that leans more their direction.

I do not like the same rod (in general) for both. I prefer something less than 7' with a F or XF action for jerkbaits, and a 7' Mod. action for squarebills. The only exception is if the grass has gotten thick and grabby, then I will use a F action with the squarebills.

I do mine on a Dobyns 704.

I think a St Croix Avid that RW said is good too, you could also go 7 foot instead of 6'6 if you wanted. It is preference on length, some like longer some like shorter.

Mojo Bass 7' MH with a moderate action. Great for squarebills, i like a spinning rod for jerbaits, but i guess you could use the same setup.

Im looking at the veritas med-mod for squarebills and lipless. Now that im seeing a lot of people are using fast action for jerkbaits I will just use my 6'6" mh-f avid. Thanks guys

most guys prefer a really soft tip with a jerkbait.

the reason is so when you "jerk" the bait dips, ducks, darts, dives and dodge but does not move forward a bunch.
