Square Bill Rod

Featured Replies

I have a technique specific MF 7' crank bait rod. I was wondering what type of rod you guys use for square bills when fishing around lay-downs and rocks?

Thanks

I recently bought a 6'6" MM and I'm waiting on a 7' MHM to arrive. Between the two rods I should be good to go. You may want to reconsider the F action.

I've got a LTB 7'2" M/M that I use for squarebills. I know there's a lot of people who say it's not stiff enough to use around cover, but I haven't had an issue whatsoever.

I use a 7'm BPS crankin stick it seems a tad stiffer then most medium crankbait rods I really like it for squarebills.

I use an ABU Vendetta 7' M. To me, it fishes a little heavier than most medium power rods which makes it great for squarebills.

I have used a few different rods for square bills but last year I got what I think is the best rod for square bills and traps that I ever used. 7'2" M-MF Fenwick HMG, it still has me shaking my head as it is a medium power rod that is rated 3/8oz to 1oz but it truly does feel like a medium with a mod fast taper that is a true medium but it does have a little sapre power in the backbone. I have drug Xcalibur XCS 200 square bills through limbs and ripped it free from water willow beds in the river and I have only lost 1 fish that I had hooked on it.

6'6" Medium Daiwa Exceler. It says fast tip but is MF in my opinion. Very accurate when casting around cover.

Same exact thread was posted a few days ago. It's on the 2nd page using my phone. Searching never killed anyone. Not that I know of.

MHX cb845

Has the back to get them out the brush, but soft enough not to pull hooks...

For 1.5 and 2.5 I've been using a 7'1 Medium action Duckett White Ice. I am not a big crankbait fisherman, I fish mostly Jig's and plastic's so I'm interested in what people have to say on this too.

All one has to do to find out any info that they need is to use Google. If everyone did that, then we would not have a Forum to go to to ask repetitive questions and show off our latest purchase. Repetitive questions don't bother me cause if I am not interested, I don't click on it.

I use a Duckett Micro Magic crankin rod, 7' MM. I used it for jerkbaits earlier when the water was cooler, now im using it for a square bill. I love the rod, although I caught a 4 lber on it the other day and it was almost completely bent in half, I thought for sure it was going to snap.

I like something a touch faster, like a mod-fast or even a fast because I fish squarebills around grass and the faster action helps to "rip" them free when they get snagged, like a lipless crank

Whoops, just read your first post. Didn't know you were fishing laysdowns and riprap.

Since my squarebillls aren't large, I fish them on whichever Medium rod I have in hand.  Almost all are Fast action.  Just received a 7'2" M-MF Fenwick HMG (after 5 weeks on backorder) that I bought due to smalljaw67's high regard for the rod.  Dan has always given me excellent advice.  A stop at DSG for a couple larger squarebills is now in order.  :teeth3:

The HMG is a heck of a rod. I have a MHF casting.

6'10 mojo bass target cranked is a killer

Medium or Medium heavy with a fast action. About 7 feet is good. And graphite, glass is good for deep/open water.

Daiwa green handle glass..
