What is your favorite lure retriever and why. I never cared much to even bother until I lost two $30 lures the other day. Need one that is compact and effective. The Daiwa one looks good and the BPS ones look like crap and I've seen people break those ones.

Fits in your pocket, I bought the three pack a few years ago and I'm still on the original. Never failed to get me out of trouble.

Yea I have some  of those or well one now. The other two are at the bottom of a lake.

I believe mine is the DotLine Telescopic lure retriever that you can get at TW. I'm pretty sure they used to make two models and I have the longer one, but even the shorter one should work well. I like them because I have direct contact with the bait and they flat out work. I've still lost a few lures, but far fewer than I did when I was using a plug knocker. I would recommend them to anyone who fishes since it will usually pay for itself over a day of fishing. 

I have a hound dog lure retriever. Its the only lure retriever i have ever used so I cant compare it to others. It is awkward to use but has almost a 100 percent success rate with it . I dont think those knockers would work well for me because I frequently get hung in fishing line  and the only way to get out is to snag a hook and pull it free .

I also prefer a telescopic one. Ive never had good results with one that slides down line. I usually ended up getting out telescooung one to get lure and plug knocker then. One i have may be same as WIguide mentioned above. It has 5 or 6 sections that extend out to about 30ft total. Means it works on lures above you as well as below also.

Strike Zone Pocket Knocker. My experience with the telescopic removers has been awful, usually end up breaking the line before it even make contact with the line.

 

I cannot count how many baits I have gotten back with the pocket knocker. Easily 30-40. But have only lost 1 pocket knocker which tells you it has only failed once.

Telescopic retriever for sure! Collapses and fits in rod holder in my 16 ft tracker.

Extends in a moment and always does the job. Never had line break.

Another vote for the telescoping type. They work in trees above and below the water and a far less cumbersome to use than a knocker IMO

Thanks for posting this, I'm getting back into crankbaits and have been flip flop'n on what to use for a retriever a pole or the knocker style. I like this concept. Thanks again for the info.

Yeah, I agree with DoDFire. I've never used a lure retriever, but this home-made one looks like a good method. 

My problem is when I snag cranks while bank fishing. This still might work the majority of the time. 

This subject has been broached a few times over the years, I'll re-state my opinion.  If you're fishing out of a boat, you need both.  Often the extendable pole works best, and it is a little easier to deploy.   Other times there isn't any substitute for the hound dog type retriever.  Consider the cost of the tools compared to the cost/hassle of bait replacement and it gets real simple.  Just get them both.

This is what Im using right now. Its a little overkill but ive got a 100% success rate

Here's a picture of the Pocket Knocker. I made my own with clips or zip ties and old nuts and washers. 

 

I like the idea of using steel that will eventually rust away unlike lead. I also use the Bass Pro model on a chord. I used an old broken rod with reel seat and wound the chord on an old bait caster. This Bass Pro one with chains is more for treble hook baits where as the pocket knocker works for me on single hook baits.

Telescoping ones not only get your baits back, but also other people's baits out of the trees. Knockers only when you're in deep water.

Use the Lews David Fritts Get'r Back. I have only lost 2 crankbaits that I can remember since using it and I throw crankbaits a lot.
