I read that IPT is more important than gear ratio.  I get that having a high IPT would help take up slack on a hookset and get a fish out of the salad and into the boat faster.  But aren't the two relative?  What gives one 6.4:1 reel a higher IPT than another?

How big (how much line does it hold) the spool is and how full the spool is can affect IPT.  Handle size can as well, although I'm not sure if this provides a significant difference. 

IPT = spool circumference X gear ratio

 

Two reels with the same gear ratio will have different IPT if the spools are different sizes.  Larger (or fuller) spool = higher IPT.

 

Check out the listed IPT for the same gear ratios in 50 size reels vs 200 size - IPT will be significantly less with the smaller reels, because their spools are smaller. 

 

Handle length doesn't affect IPT.

Ipt stands for inches per turn, how many inches of line are retrieved per turn of the handle.  Gear ratio is how many times the spool turns per turn of the reel handle, a 6.4:1 gear ratio means that for every turn of the reel handle the spool turns 6.4 times.  The IPT is based on spool size and gear ratio, so a 6.4:1 reel with a larger diameter spool will have a higher IPT than than another 6.4:1 reel with a smaller spool diameter.

How does handle size affect inches per turn? I've heard a few people say this lately and it makes no sense to me. Whether the handle is 4 inches or 4 miles the amount of line picked up by one full rotation of the handle cannot be different. Or am I missing something?

Spool diameter is the X factor. Ratio is spool rotations per 1 full turn of the handle. The greater the spool diameter the more line it takes up with each rotation. A single rotation of the handle equals one turn of the main shaft regardless of the handles length.

Maybe it's just a feeling thing? My reels with larger handles feel like they're picking up a little more line than ones with smaller handles.  For instance, my older Quantum Energy and Curado E7 both have the same gear ratio and hold about the same amount of line.  I "feel" like my E7 pulls in more line than the Energy.  Since they're similar in the other respects, I equate the "different feel" to their handle sizes.  The Energy's is smaller.  

 

This could just be in my head though..

 It is in your head. A 200mm handle has the same IPT on the same reel with a 60mm handle. Simple science.

You arent missing anything. You are correct. They are wrong.

As has been stated the IPT doesn't change with handle length.  However, a shorter handle will tend to pick up more line in a shorter time period because it tends to spin faster because of it's shorter radius.  The trade off is a loss of torque.   One can consciously slow it down.  Hope this makes sense.

The math is correct...you also need to factor in spool width that affect line capacity.

With each layer of line coming off the spool the IPT is reduces, the gear ratio stays constant regardless of handle size.
