When its legal and i'm not driving, I like to do a little light beer drinking (at least that is the plan in the beginning). I like a beer with a little bit of flavor, starting with a European Lager or Pilsner but preferably an American Ale or IPA. Founder's All Day IPA is my go-to but on long fishing trips I sometimes end up saying things i kind of regret like "You must be the only guy that owns white sunglasses that is not a ******." or "Man, your wife is so hot. If you weren't married to her..." by dusk.

 

What do you guys drink out there that is not a Bud or Miller type beer when you don't want to get too intoxicated?

 

 

 

It is self control. Don't want to get drunk don't drink until you are drunk.

i have self control in the beginning. a couple hours in, im taking sips too often without thinking.

 

im never getting drunk. the last few hours are just a bit more than i'd like and im looking for a good beer with low alcohol content to replace my All Day's which are already low content for an IPA...

 

 

 

 

Going to a beer with less alcohol isn't going to give you more self control. Age sometimes gives people more self control, then again it sometimes doesn't. Good luck, if you were serious about your quotes you're going to need all the luck you can get. ?

its not about self control. i dont drink to get drunk but i enjoy the taste of beer and have more than a couple. 

 

if you guys are hurt because i dont like watery american lager, please dont get me wrong. if my throat is dry and you hand me a bud light limon i will thank you and drink it with a smile. if im buying it will be a different brand.

 

as far as talking to my friends like that - sure. i was trying to make the thread a little entertaining but i would and have said things like that to my close friends when sober. tough love. i have never fished with anyone wearing white sunglasses, hope to soon.

Taste is subjective, but the best low-alcohol beer I've ever drank

is "Anheuser O'Doul's", it actually tastes like lager beer.

You can be a social butterfly all evening, and drive home sober

Stone Go-To IPA is a good one if you like it piney, and it's about 4.5% ABV

Those are my usual go to drinks. I don't need more than 2 or 3 before I'm good and they are delicious imo. I'm always trying something new when I can. There's just too many beers out there! 

 

If you like a sour beer, try a gose style.  Naturally lower ABV%, and very tasty.  Sierra Nevada Otra Vez is a good one to start with.

We have a local beer up here in nh called tuckermans...yummy.

I noticed your screen name was bigfruits.  Could be pure coincidence and I'm sure there will be some disagreement on this but if your looking for something with low alcohol and a lot of taste, try a shandy.  Its seasonable but its available now.  Some say they taste more like a sour lemonade than a beer but I enjoy one or two.  The caveat is that since they're kinda sweet, you really can't keep going on them because they'll give you gut rot.  The summer shandy is the most popular but I found one made by shock top last year called lemon shandy that had more of a subtle lemon flavor.

I'm with @RoLo, but I prefer the Amber O'douls. I'm currently taking a break from drinking, but I actually enjoy the brown bottle O'Douls.

Kalibur by Guiness is a "non-alcoholic" beer that's very dark and full flavored.  As far as lower alcohol content goes, there's plenty of crafted Lager, Pils, whit, hefewiezen, or Belgian style beers in the sub 6% range.  As far as shandy goes, Leinenkugal's Summer Shandy is pretty good, but gets old, fast.

 

Personally, I don't drink on the water.  When things go bad on the water, they go bad fast, and want my faculty.  That's not to say I'm entirely innocent in the past.

Canned Heineken, no skunk, pretty darn close to draft flavor, lower ABV.   I live in the land of milk and honey beerwise (Founders, Alchemist, 14th Star, Lawson's, Hill Farmstead, Rock Art, Switchback, and Fiddlehead to name a few) and reach for a Heinie when I need to be even close to responsible.

I like beer too.  In fact, I like it so much that I stopped drinking it (and all alcohol) 12 years ago. I totally understand the honest intention of "I'm only going to have a couple" and then finding myself drunk. I envy people who can stop after a couple. I'm not one of those people.  There will be no lecture in here and I don't have a soapbox, but if you are truly concerned about getting too intoxicated in certain situations then you shouldn't drink any alcohol in those situations.

 

If you can live without the buzz but still want the taste there are some pretty good N/A beers out there.  O'Doul's would not be one of my top choices though, sorry guys, I'd rather drink Busch N/A before O'Doul's.  @J Francho mentioned Kaliber which is good. Beck's and Clausthaler also make a good one. My favorite is St. Pauli Girl N/A. Delicious!!!

I think my initial post might have made me seem a little thirstier than I really am.  

 

I might drink beer maybe 6 or 7 times a month. This does not count a beer at lunch  

 

I dont drink every fishing outing but when i do, I will drink my share but I do not get drunk - i dont bring enough for that. But I sure get tired!

 

I guess im looking for a another session ale a bit weaker than Founders All Day but just as flavorful.

sessions are as low as you are going to get without going NA my friend.

i think im going to try that Stone Go-To although alcohol content is the same if i can find it. I like their regular IPA and Arrogant Bas**rd is one of my favorite beers when on tap. The bottle doesnt come close on this particular beer.

I am a fan of the Founders All Day IPA, when I just want to catch a little buzz while fishing or mowing my lawn.    Here in Missouri, All Day IPA is available in bottles for around $10 per six pack OR $17 for a 15 pack in cans.  For fishing, the key is to only bring so many.  If you bring the whole 15 pack you will likely drink most of them.   For me, I bring 4 or 5 and that's it - when you're out, you're out.  

Not a big fan of Shandies, per se.   Leinenkugal shandies aren't for me.   They have a "metallic" taste to them and furthermore,  Leinies are more of a pseudo craft beer than a reel craft beer, IMO.

For hot weather fishing, I don't think you can beat Shiner Ruby Redbird - a relatively LA beer with a grapefruit/ginger tang.   They are an acquired taste, you either like them or you don't.    Some beer snobs refer to them as a semi-shandy, other beer snobs put the Ruby Redbird in the "radler" class, while still other beer snobs refer to Ruby Redbird as an abomination.   Don't care - as long as they are ICE COLD they work great for me in hot weather.

I'm an alcoholic and haven't had a drink in over a year. It turns out I'm allergic to alcohol, when I drink it I break out in handcuffs. I do, however, still enjoy having a beer, so I drink NA, and I prefer Kaliber. It's best described as guinness light, and it is exceptionally tasty and far more beer like than the others. Buckler by Heineken and St Pauli Girl NA's are 2 other better quality non alcoholic brews, my go tos if I can't get Kaliber. Clausthauler is not my favorite and I think O'Doul's tastes like crap, but fully agree that yes, the brown bottles are better than the green, as the green ones get skunky fast. Of the cheaper canned NA's, Busch NA is probably best and Old Milwaukee NA is in a close second. As for the O'Douls, Busch, and Old Milwaukee NA's, they are 1000 times better served over ice if you can pack some. To add to the shandy conversation, before I quit I have sampled many and I never had a shock top that I didn't like, their raspberry wheat was one of my favorites.
