How to cook grey squirrels

Featured Replies

I shot 4 this weekend. Beautiful day to be out. Now how do I cook em. Supposedly they're really good.

I have only seen them skinned, filleted and cooked into stew or dumplings. I've never seen squirrel eaten by itself.

I've eaten many right off the grill:ok-wink: soak/marinate if you wish and throw 'em on the grill.

this time of year here in Virginia , they still have wolves in them. We never killed them for eating until cold weather

wolves??

Parasites (Bot Fly)  we call them wolves

This^^^  should be noticable when cleaned. Cold weather gets rid of em.

One of the ones I shot had some hair missing in a small spot and a circular shaped hole. Is this from those parasites??

I had to take a bot fly larva out of a kitten before. Most disgusting thing I've ever done/seen. I'll gut a deer all day long but I'd have a hard time taking another bot fly out.

P.s. people can get them too

A friend of mine had one taken out of his forehead.  Got it in the tropics.  He could feel it moving around in there.  Only one of many doctors in the states knew what it was and how to handle it.

You can make squirrel pretty much any way you make chicken. Same with rabbit

The larva burrows into your skin and feeds off from the inside of your skin. Once it reaches maturity it'll come out. They have little burrs on them that makes taking them out a bit tricky. Pretty gross.

I'mfixing  squirrel today . I'm going to attempt the way my Mom use to cook them . Some of the best eating I ever had . Fry  them . Then make gravy with the drippings , throw squirrel and gravy in a crock pot and cook for several hours . I'm going to add a can of mushrooms .

Squirrel and dumplin's

Take four good Squirrels and boil them until tender, Take meat off the bones but save the broth, cut up 5-6 cans of cheap always save biscuits.

Cut up each biscuit into 4 sections and roll each piece in a milk and butter batter and finally flour them. Now add seasonings and the squirrel meat eat to the broth. Get it boiling good and dump in your biscuits for about 20 min.    Talking about good!  This recipe usually requires sweet Tea and a foot stool  {Bot flies are optional}
