So I was looking to upgrade the motor on my 2006 Pro Team TX to something stronger. Currently has the 25 hp 4 stroke, and I’m looking into the 60hp’s. Talked to the guy that runs the marine shop that winterizes my boat (mercury franchise), and he thought that going up would be too much weight added to the back of that boat, making the waterline too high and letting water come over the back when moving.

 

So for you guys that are using a larger motor, have you seen where this has been a problem? Is this a legitimate concern, or is he just trying to get me in a different boat rather than getting a different motor?

My gut says he's full of it.

 

Tracker sells PT175's with 60HP 4 strokes as the standard motor, and it's rated for up to a 75.

 

Look at the CG plate on your boat for max HP ratings and motor weight ratings, then look up the specs on the motor you want, if it falls below the ratings on the plate you"should" be GTG. If that dealer only wants to sell you boat and is stubborn about selling you a motor upgrade, look for another dealer. Lots of Mercury dealers around.

Yeah that doesn't make sense at all since 75hp is the max. Another thing that doesn't make sense is why he wouldn't want to do the work? This time of the year I imagine is slower than normal, plus I imagine he'd make a pretty good coin off from you. I'd go somewhere else and see what they have to say.

This is a 17' Tracker not a 14' or 15' model tracker? If it is a 17' and the CG plate says good up to 75hp he might be/is full of it. If it is a 14-15' and CG plate says max 40hp He is probably right.

A friend of mine has a 175 with a 75.  No problems there.

I checked the data plate after work and it says it’s rated for a 75hp (390lb max) motor.

Sounds like you need to find a new dealer that you can trust. Your past dealer isn't being honest with you.   

I would find a new dealer personally then as they do not know what they are talking about. My 2002 PT 175 I was running a 2004 75hp EFI and never had a problem. My X18 Xpress is running a 150 Opti and the ass end gets swamped if I just drop it off plane to a stand still but the Tracker didn't.

Max that sucker out with a 75

I have a 98 175. I blew the original 40HP force motor that came with it. When I went looking for a new motor the dealer said I could go to a 75HP but if I went with a 4 stroke I could only go to a 60HP due to the increased weight. I ended up putting another 40HP on it.

 

 I have a 60HP Evinrude ETech on my 1754 Grizzly.  No issues at all.
