Catfish love tubes. I’ve caught several 8+ lbs over the years. 

 

Tubes are still one of my favorite winter time baits. I usually t-rig it on a 3/0 hook and 1/8 oz bullet with a shallow skin hook. Then drag it on the bottom and hop it over cypress stumps. Not many other folks here in MS throw tubes and I believe it’s in my advantage. Similar sized creature baits have too much action when the water drops into the 40s

I am not sure of any manufacturer that doesnt use salt in their tubes. I use a Trokar tube hook.

I love tubes. Caught a lot of largemouth on tubes this past year casting out and letting it set into weeds then ripping it out and they would crush it on the drop.  Am using SK coffee tubes with a 3/0 or 4/0 internal jig head. The open hook is large enough to rip out of the weeds clean. Became my favorite  technique last year. 

In the past 4 or 5 years tubes have become a go to bait for me, no matter the season. Simple in design but the ways to rig and fish them are endless. This is my favorite bait to throw when there is a jig bite and I'm fishing back seat

I just made up a dozen or so home made Phantom jigs.  This'll be the year of the tube for me.  Tubes have been spotty for me but I am determined to master them.

I have a tube tied on about 90% of the time

 

Tubes are the deal in Southeast Texas during the cold weather. You need to make sure and use a medium fast not a medium light. 

Where I reside  the water is always stained  to muddy and tubes get used sporadically  . When I visit an Ozark impoundment , tubes always  get used . In my only two trips to Bull Shoals tubes have been the best producer for smallmouths . 

I used tubes infrequently until Gary Klein used one on 'A day on the lake' article in Bassmaster magazine years ago.  He smashed the record for total weight throwing a smoke/red flake power tube w/ tail dipped in chartruse spike-it.  He said a tube was his favorite post spawn bait.  Tubes are now a staple for me.

I just browsed and I don't see any love for the 4.5"-6" offerings. Fill the nose with another piece of soft plastic then use a flashy swimmer Or flipping them into brush. A 5"-6" tube is BULKY. sometimes that's the deal. I do fish the stupid tube often, with 3.5"-4.5"'s. Chuck and wind, hop, crawl, all have produced numbers. This tube really gets overlooked. In my opinion it's the most versatile soft plastic in my bag. I can finesse a tube, I can power fish a tube, I can fish it on spinning gear, I can use casting gear, hot weather, cold weather, shallow, deep, structure, open water, it literally does it all.

I have a bag or two that meets that description. I picked up a large quantity of various colored tubes on sale maybe 20 years ago. I never used the "Baby Diaper Yellow".  Maybe I'll have to try them.  ?
