Hello,

I am pretty new with bass fishing with only around 2 years. I was just wondering about some jig modifications I can do, and if I should trim the skirt, and if I do how much should I? What are some good trailers?

I thin or trim the weed guard, I don't mess with the skirts.

Trailer depends on what jig and what I'm trying to do.

I'd say bottom work is a Ragetail Craw in watermelon/red flake, black/blue flake, Green pumpkin.

Swimming it's paddletails, Keitech or Biospawn.  

Punching, Rage Bug.

I trim the weedguard back so it clears the hook. I don’t shorten the skirt unless it is very long. I usually just even it up.

Sahweet! Those will do some damage on Lake Winni for sure.

 

If memory serves me, a jig like you have with no skirt with a Yamamoto Hula Grub on your lake was a big producer for me.

 

Good job bud.

The only modification I do is bend the weed-guard    to weaken it  , so it collapses easier on a hook-set .

For trailers I like the Zoom Ultra Vibe Speed Craw and the Twin Tail Grub. Also use a small Swimming Chunk once in a while.

I’m pretty new to jig fishing too and I don’t modify any jig. 

I started with some cheap brand like booyah and strike king. As of now I learn how to work jig uphill and downhill with less hang up, and how to detect bite. I use mostly natural color green pumpkin, brown/purple and black blue. The trailer that work for me Rage Menace, Rage Craw and Missile bait D bomb.

I just trim the weedguard like everyone stated. But don’t make it super short or it becomes real stiff. Some good trailers are strike king rage craw, gambler ugly otters, googan baits bandito bug, d bomb by Missile baits is also good.

I teach new anglers to jig fishing using 3/8-1/2 oz Yamamoto Football jig with wire weed gaurd and 4" double tail  for deep rock structure lakes and Yamamoto Hula Grub jig with fiber weed guard for lakes with more cover.

Black painted plain GYBC jigs with either Gamakatsu or Owner hooks are under $5 for 5 jigs, Hula Grubs are under $8 for 10 each. I like #221 & 301.

If you modify a fiber weed gaurd by cutting shorter it stiffens it. Silicone jig skirts are usually a little longer then needed, you can trim about 3/4" longer then the hook bend, living rubber or hair don't fool with.

Jigs with skirts I use soft plastic Berkley Chigger Craws or GYCB double tail grubs.

The only skirts I trim are on the jigs I use for really tough conditions. Then, I'll trim them even with the hook bend and add a trailer like a Rage Tail Chunk.  https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/strike-king-rage-tail-chunk-soft-bait-lures

Trimming the skirt allows the trailer to move freely. 

If I'm fishing a lot of timber, I may stiffen up the weed guard by shortening it a little, but on most of the Arkie style jigs I use, the guard is stiff enough. 

Just remember, a bulky trailer will affect the jig's fall rate and one like a RageTail will slow it even more. Trust me when I say; Fall rate is paramount to jig fishing.
