Sticky reel grips

Featured Replies

Several of my reels, specifically shimano, have the"technical grip" rubber handles.

Over the years im assuming mainly from the sun causes these grips to get extremely sticky and quite annoying.

My question is, has anyone found a method to get rid of the sticky mess? I've tried simple green, soap water, even acetone with no luck.

Thanks

I just removed them and took to kitchen sink and scrubbed hard with sponge and dawn. No dice.

Just emailed shimano to see if they would send replacements. If no go I'll probably swap the whole handle out as you mentioned @MAN.

Shimano already contacted me back.

Can't buy just the knobs even though they're easily removable. They want $30 for the whole handle. Pppffffffffff!

Looks like a new handle it is...

Never had that issue with Lews or Daiwa.  Any chance you got sunblock or bug repellent on them?

https://fishshop.shimano.com/collections/cu200k

BNT5767 Handle Knob $3.43 each with free shipping.

Those are for the Curado K, not sure which knobs you are after but they are all available on the Shimano website.

The reel im replacing is a curado E7. Any idea if those Curado K would interchange?

I can't say for certain but I don't see why they wouldn't. shimano knobs are pretty universal on their own handles like daiwa is /w theirs. I have a set on my 51E that needs replacing and I'll probably order these same knobs. Those buggers get slippery when wet.

I do believe they will. Post should be the same length. I have a Citica 200E I can check later if someone doesn't chime in and confirm. Might as well order some bearings off the auction site to throw in there as well.

the stickyness is the septon rubber breaking down. i believe shimano traced it to chemicals found in sunscreens and bug sprays that break down the Septon and cause the stickyness.

i doubt there is a way to rehab them because of this. replacement is the only option.

i believe the newer shimanos no longer use Septon for this reason. they are a different rubber now.

I put reel grips on all my reels..i like how they feel.

I do the same..

I use astringent deep cleaning cleanse from walmart. its in the makeup departmant

bottom shelf. Ask the girls or the wife she will know

Another quick fix is a couple wraps of Rescue Tape in any color you want.  This stuff is inedible if you have never used it.  It is a stretch silicone that sticks to it self.  Larry Dahlberg put me on to it several years ago and I use it on several rod handles also for comfort. Also keep two rolls in the boat and use it for everything. When you want to remove it no sticky left.  I am just a user and get it here: https://www.rescuetape.com/

I hate the smell of bug spray,  and sunscreen reacts to my skin. So something else is also breaking down the material.

I have tried numerous things with the same exact issue and never had any luck getting that tacky feeling to go away.  I just ordered a new knob set from e-replacement parts.  I think they were $4 each.  Problem solved.

I had the same issue. What finally worked is that I applied a silicone spray. (same stuff sold for waterproofing camping gear.)
