Fishing Lingo mis-pronunciations

Featured Replies

  • Super User

Kind of dovetailing off the “Fishing Lingo” thread, I hear a lot of fishing terminology mis-pronounced.  But knowing things are pronounced differently in certain areas of the country, maybe I'm the wrong one..!

•”KamaGatsu” hooks instead of Gamakatsu

•“Sinko” instead of Senko

•”Polymer” knot

•”Polaroid” sunglasses

They should've used an umlaut.  Would have been more metal \m/

HUK - Huck instead of Hook

I did not know it was pronounced Hook

Sort of different, but I can't stand when someone calls a fishing rod a fishing pole. Something about that makes me imagine the person is in grade school.

Sorry! It's always made me cringe. Can't help it. The good news is my opinion doesn't matter. :)

The $9.99 Disney Frozen 2 spincast combo at Walmart is an amazing 3/4oz jig rod. ;)

Here in Iowa a creek is pronounced crick.

Bream/brim

Mustad - pronounced mus-TODD

Using in' instead of ing at the end, like: fishin', flippin', pitchin', jiggin', etc.

When people replace snag for hook, especiall in newspaper articles, like "He snagged the record bass fishin' with a pole and rubber worm"

While we're at it, why is an anchor attached to a rope, and you tie the bow and stern off with lines? Or is it the other way around?  Aren't they the same thing?

Starbird/starboard - one is the side of a boat, the other from space

Peddle, paddle, petal, pedal versions of kayaks

Their all crazy things! :P

Up here if they don't say strawberry bass, they say croppy.  Worst ever.

Cull vs Call.  Unless you have a fancy app, a phone is not necessary for this process ??

My boat has a console.  I've seen others that claim theirs has a council.

Largie, smallie, bucket mouth, green bass, brown bass.

Whoops that belongs in the other thread

This one's good because everyone is reading it the way they think it should be pronounced ? It makes me cringe when I hear people pronounce it ruh-paw-luh. I think it's more of an accent thing since no one around here pronounces it like that

Karl Kalonka from Extreme Angler cracks me up. He'll talk about how important polarization is for your sunglasses to see into the water, and then he'll mention "polaroid" sunglasses.

Everyone around here (that I'm aware of) pronounces it this way.  When I heard "rap-uh-luh" the first time, I was like "....what?"
