CHATTERBAIT TRAILER...paddletail or not?

Featured Replies

seems like a few years ago the consensus was regular fluke type trailer for a chatterbait.....now, I see more paddletail trailers being used..

what are your thoughts?

and, what do you use?

thanks...

There are several (million) trailers that work, I use a few and there really isn’t any rhyme or reason to what I hang on the back as these all catch fish for me.

The Strike King Rage Bug, Rage Menace and Blade Minnow are good.  As is the Yamamota Zako.

I’ve fished paddle tail swimbait style trailers quite a bit in the past and have all but abandoned their use here.

Where a swimbait makes an excellent trailer on swim jigs and spinnerbaits – It just does not produce for me like the baits mentioned above.

Even when I turn the tail up, which may folks swear by.

I actually have never used a fluke on a chatterbait - or spinner or buzzbait for that matter. What I do use varies based on 'feel'

Eco Pro Swing Shad or RI Skinny Dipper - both of which are paddletails

I also use

Berkley Havoc Pit Boss, Missile D'Stroyer, Strike King Rage Bug, Zoom Ultra Vibe Chunk or Berkley Power Chigger Claw.

Fat impact, sweet beaver, fluke, blade minnow, no real rhyme or reason on which one I use, but I will usually throw one of these on.

I dont fish chatterbaits very much but when I have i'm a fan of using rage menace grubs as a trailer. I see a lot of guys using Zakos as well.  They look fantastic as a trailer and I'm planing on picking some up as soon as my local Scheels gets all the open water stuff on the floor.  Has anyone used the paddle tail Kickin Zakos?

I use the Eeiliminator on mine. You can also use it on spinnerbaits as well. Very versatile bait!

Try it on a swing head.

But don't tell anyone.

i've caught fish on various different trailers. the z-man razor shad was my staple last season - has great action and the durability of the elaztech is UNBEATABLE in my opinion.

Pitboss,  Devil's Spear, or Rage Menace rigged vertically are my favorites. I use a paddletail sometimes also.

I really love the Zako but I don't love how easily pickerel rip them to shreds.

Paddletails are ok if rigged upside down but I still prefer the beef of the Zako and its lithe tail behind.

I've run Rage Swimmers, Menace Grubs, various fluke styles, creatures and craws but my best bites have been on downsized trailers. Old school split tail trailers have been a winner and I've really been liking a a 4'' hook tail ring worm as well. Those two put the biggest fish in the boat consistently all summer during all conditions.

thanks for the replies..

I mainly  use a swimmin' fluke and/or Rage Menace

have also used a Rage Baby Craw vertical..

gonna try the blade minnow this Spring too

Zman Razor Shadz!!  Great action, so durable it is almost ridiculous.  I ALWAYS have a chatter bait tied on and I can use a single Razor Shadz for weeks or longer with no adjustments and after multiple fish catches.  I do switch it up if I am not getting bit on these (twin tails vertical, grass pigs- a subtle paddle tail, etc.), but they have been awesome for me.  I seem to get more casts in when I am not having to change baits or re-adjust so often.

I use a Yamamoto Zako mostly.  I also like a 5 inch Senko.

I do use a Zako when I want more weight!   They are a solid trailer.

LFT magic shad

It will work. The problem for more detail oriented anglers lies in having two different actions on the bait and paddletail due to water disruption by the blade. Flip it upside down to eliminate the double action problem if you don't like it.

I either use a swim senko (or copy), Keitech or a Lake Fork Live Magic Shad trailer. If I use a Keitech, I usually cut the end of the tail off to give it a consistent action.
