So after cutting line to add lures. 2 snags where I lost some line. My baitcasting is down to half to belittle under half spool of fluro. I can tell because I can launch it out and have only handful wraps left.

 

Do you just cut off and add new line? Seems like big waste of line

When the level reaches a point that it just doesn't pay to cast, I use it as backing.  When the knot starts showing and interferes with casting, it's time to re-line.

maybe think about using a braid to floro leader for bank fishing. if you get snagged and have to break it off the weaker leader line breaks and you only lose a few feet of line.

That's why I use backing with fluoro. Fill the spool about half full with cheap mono, then the rest with fluoro.

I pull the line off and add more backing.

On my BCs - no matter what I'm using as mainline, I back it up with half the spool filled with cheap mono. Big Game 10# is what I'm using for backing currently.

I have started a process going forward where I am putting cheap 40# braid as backing on all my reels.  I like having a full spool with reasonably fresh line, and it feels like such a waste to throw away so much line that never touches the water because it is at the bottom of the spool.  Once done, I can imagine the braid backing lasting the life of the reel.

If it’s just backing buy fly line backing. Way cheaper than braid mainline.

Even better.  When I get done using old braid, I will get that.  It looks like it is basically even cheaper braid.

A lot lighter than mono or fluoro too, so it helps your spool start up faster.

smaller capacity reels...

   I use Big Game. I buy the bulk spools, and I buy them on sale. I re-spool ..... because I can afford to.     jj

I actually like this when fishing from shore. Makes me stop bombin' lures - can be a bad habit.

Often the bass are only a few feet away!

Strip it for new because I don't use line as expensive as a mid tier rod or reel.

I just re-spool, but then again I don't use reels that take 140 yards of line. I never could understand why so many fishermen in the US feel they need so much line when as someone pointed out, half of it has never seen the water.

Most all of my reels take 70-80 yards of line. I can get at least 2 full spools from each bobbin of line.

 

After that I don't care as the line will be to old to use anyway.

 

US bass fishermen.... 8' rods and reels that hold 150 yd. of line...

The rest of the world.....6-7' rods and 90 yd. of line...???

If your worried about expense and wanting fresh line take a page from salt water fishermen.  A top shot being the best answer.  Fill the spool up with a good braid and put 20 ish yards of your flourocarbon on top.  I do this a lot and using the Alberto knot means I just cast passing the knot on longer casts.

I use micro guides and hate knots in my line.i just respool totally.then again I don't use flouro.buy reels with smaller spools.

I would, as others have suggested, take a little of the line off and use it as backing.  Then I would add new line.
