It doesn’t look like a 12 pound bass but pictures are hard to judge. A nice bass either way. 

It looks like 12 lbs to me. This is 12.4  

 

Hard to judge weight through a photo but that fish  doesn’t look close to 12lbs. Nice fish though 

Could be 12... Long fish. Regardless, beautiful fish. He doesn't seem to worried about the record. The estimated weight of a 27"LMB on the In-Fisherman chart linked on this site(I believe) under "Tools" is 11.95lbs.

Big for NY but 12 lbs? Idk, maybe...Either way nice catch. I like how they keep saying "unnamed pond" does that mean private property? I've wondered if state records can be recorded if technically a fish was caught on private property, permissible or otherwise...

Who cares what it weighs.  He didn't weigh it, so no point guessing. If he has the length and it's verified, he can have the catch and release record. That's currently at 24.75". This fish smashes that record. Nice job. 

He'd have to name the pond and it would have to public fishing water. My guess is he doesn't care about the record, and doesn't want the spot burnt. 

So what if you protect the fish, transport it to a certified scale, weight it and then safely release it? No one ever said that there is a time frame between when it’s caught and when it’s released. Oh the things you can think about while fishing.....

According to NY fishing regulations;

”Catch and Release means catching and immediately releasing the caught fish without harm.”

Regulations clearly say catch and immediate release.  Transport is illegal.

I just looked it up. They can’t be held on a string or placed in a bucket, tub, live well or any other holding device.

 

6 CRR-NY 10.1 (c) (8) says “catch and release angling (i.e., catching and returning a fish to the water without causing it harm) is only permitted during the open season for a particular species. Measuring, weighing and photographing the fish are permitted as long as the fish is not removed from the water for an extended period or handled in a manner that could cause harm such fish may not be held on a string, or placed in a bucket, tub, live well or any other holding device.”
