Hi guys, my jig fishing will be anywhere from 1-15’ depths. I mostly fish 1-10’.  I’ll be using either 3/8oz. Flipping jigs, or 1/4oz. swim jigs. Cover will be sparse and NOT thick when I do cast into some. 

 

What lb test do you guys recommend for these applications. I typically fish with a Fluoro leader.

I do all my jig fishing with 15# Big Game.

Based on what you wrote, it sounds like you are using braid with a leader of fluoro, though you didn’t specifically state that. So are you asking about the pound test to use of the braid, or the leader, or both ? Or are you using some other type of line setup? Also safe to assume this is in reference to a bait cast setup?

If you are in fact using a leader, then I agree with RW, that 12 lb fluro would be fine.

If not then let us know if your going to use all fluro or..?

12lb YZH or 12lb Big Game. The stuff is so strong and the break strength is well above its stated test that you do yourself a disservice fishing 15lb or higher.

If braid, then no leader otherwise 12lb Copolymer or 15lb FC. These are actually my two setups for Jig

If there is never any cover, you could go as low as 12# as previously mentioned. 16# would be my normal go to line for jigs except in thick weeds where I get out the flipping stick with braid.

Or 12# InvizX if the Tatsu is too pricey for you.

I use 30 lb Smackdown with 12 lb mono leader.

im using a braid mainline 15lb. Then I would be using a Fluoro leader for invisibility. My question is about the leader lb test. I use Seagaur Blue label for leader.

16# or 20# straight flouro depending on cover.

That is some light braid for a jig, or anything on a baitcaster imho.  I've used 20 lb braid, and it still gets dug in more than 30 lb on a baitcast reel.  I use 10 or 15 lb braid on spinning reels.

I use 15lb Tatsu for 75% of my jig fishing. Sounds like 15lb would be perfect for what you're doing or you could drop down to 12lb if tying 15lb leader is an issue.

I have been fishing jigs in deep rock structure lakes, 1’ to 40’ deep with sparse cover for over 60 years using 10 to 12 on mono and the past 25 years with  FC, (.011D-.013D)  no leader very successfully.

The BS about line stretch is just that.

FC has lower coefficient of drag going through water with less belly in the line so anglers feel lure movements with less drag against the line. The factor gives FC a slight advantage over mono for bottom contact lures. You lose abrasion and knot strength with FC, improved strike detection is the price you pay plus higher cost.
