Anyone try magnet fishing??

Featured Replies

Me and my wife got the spark to try our hand at magnet fishing. So we bought an 800lb neodymium magnet off Amazon and have tried it once. I had to wade into the lake to get it unstuck once haha. But she caught some hooks and bottle caps so far. Has anyone tried it, if so post up your best catches!!

We got one for my son last year. He found a bunch of nails at our boat launch. ?

He’s found some BB’s off our dock and found one of his spinnerbaits he lost two years ago, other than that nothing spectacular.

Yes.

Ended up with some old pipe and a bunch of nails.

Then the magnet got stuck on the metal beam holding up the dock and I had to have a guy in a bass boat pull it off for me.

Have not used it since.

I would love to give it a try sometime, it looks really fun.

They call it fishing, but its basically throwing big, high powered magnets into the water and see what you find. I know you tube videos sensationalize just about everything and not everyone finds knives and jewelry, but you never know until you try! My wife likes it so she can do that and I'll fish!

My buddy’s kids brought one camping, he said they get themselves into trouble sticking it on things that are too big like the deck of a riding lawnmower And he has to knock it off with a sledgehammer. They caught a bunch of nails and some metal stakes. The one time it did come in handy is when one of the kids rode their bicycle through yellow jacket nest and they went back later and retrieved the bicycle with the magnet

Playing with magnets can be very dangerous

I have a large retriever magnet but it's not near the power of the ones they use for magnet fishing. I use to toss it around docks when I was a kid. Got some pliers, pocket knives, lots of rusty nails, screws, and hooks, never anything good.

I bought a neodymium mounted bar magnet about 3 1/2" long that was rated for 150 pounds to hold the blades for a knife and axe sharpener I was building.  That was way too much, put and axe head or large knife on it and you have to have a pry bar to get it back off.  Ordered another 2 3/4" rated for 80 pounds.  It's still a fight getting an axe or large blade off but the suckers don't move once they are on there.

Based on those two, I don't see how you could ever get anything off one rated at 800#, unless it's one from China they over rated the crap out of like the do most everything else.  Even with my 80# one, the only way you are going to get anything off it is pull it to the edge, and that's a tug, so there is very little metal contact.
