Big worms/ hook size

Featured Replies

I've been fishing for years but have never tried big worms, 10+. What size hook do you use? Ewg, straight worm or offset round bend?

Thank you

I fish with the Zoom Ol Monsters and rig them on a 5/0 EWG hook. When I fish with the Mag II worms I use a 5/0 offset shank round bend hook.

It’s not worm length as much as worm diameter and rigging that dictates hook size and style.

Fir the traditional weedless Texas rigged worm you want the hook to have a gap at least 2X with worm diameter. You also want to peg or hold the nose end of the worm to the hook eye and prevent it from sliding down the hook shank.

Today hooks with pins or screw springs will hold the worm nose on the hook eye. The old school method is to pin the worm nose through the hook eye using a round tooth pick, heavy mono line or Peg-It’s. All work.

I prefer Straight shank round bend hooks, pegged.

That’s what I use on those worms. Mostly use 3/0 EWG’s on  Jelly Worms and 3/0 round offset’s on Zoom Tricks, 5” Senkos, etc.

Mustad Grip-Pin Big Bite Hook with its’ 2X Long Offset Shank puts the hook point farther back in the worm.

I use anything from 4/0 EWG to 11/0 worm hook. I use to use 11/0 till I see so many pros suggest to use 3/0 and see the effect on bites. So now I try everything always.

Same Ol monsters but use 3/0 EWG. I use 3/0 EWG for about everything. I move down for finesse worms and up for magnum speed worms, but haven’t had any trouble on 3/0’s on those either.

You guys with your giant hooks...

I frequently use a 1/0 offset straight hook for my worms 10” and below.  I have never, ever had an issue with hooksets or losing fish because of it.

for worms 13” - “16, i’ll Use the same type hook in either a 3/0 or 5/0 respectively.

i have never experienced any necessity to rig my soft plastics with a hook the size of a d-ring, giving the appearance that they come complete with a carry handle.

This ^^^^

3/0 EWG for most long worms or sticks, also for most every creature bait I fish. Large swimbaits are an exception 5/0-7/0 EWG

I'm from the same school as Tom.  I base what hook size to use by the worms diameter where the hook point exits the worm.  That goes for all lengths of worms from 6in. to 12in. which is about the longest one I throw. I'm also of the mind to use round bend, offset shank hooks for worms, but I really like that keeper on those Mustad Grip-Pin Big Bite Hooks. I may just give them a shot. I've been using these for years for big worms  https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/eagle-claw-lazer-sharp-double-barb-worm-hook-lt095jb?searchTerm=double barb worm hook

yup, the diameter dictates the hook size.

This☝️ having the hook back farther definitely helps my hook up ratio.

1/0 on a 10" worm? You like living on the edge! ?

I like a 4 /0 hook on 10 inch worms. I might go up to 5/0 for 12+ inch worms, but don't have a ton of experience with foot long worms.

I might throw some Ol Monsters today and have a 3/0 standard wire EWG tied on already and was going to upsize, but now I'm questioning that. As if I didn't question what to throw and when and where isnt hard enough, now I'm going question if my hook is long enough!!!!!

4/0 or 5/0 works for me. They look tiny in the mouth of an 8- or 9-pound largemouth.
