Super User Cgolf Posted December 29, 2021 Super User Share Posted December 29, 2021 For Christmas I got a 12 pack of of unpainted 1/2 ounce frames from Barlows. Went with the War Eagle shaped frame and unpainted since the nickel plated WE heads rock. Worst case I paint the heads with nail polish. Since I haven’t had a lot of luck with this size baits I went with size 2 and 4 whiptail blades, to give a different vibration pattern than the common offerings. Later today I will do one with size 2 and 4 mag willows. In the future I will be buying some size 5 and 6 blades too. Most of the baits I will be modifying will be 5/16 or less so the smaller blades will be good.

BlakeMolone
Looks good! I’ve started buying unpainted jig heads when that is an option because to me they look just as natural and match any skirt color/plastic color anyway. Hope it produces for you
Super User Jig Man Posted December 29, 2021 Super User Share Posted December 29, 2021 If 5/16 is as large as you are going to assemble you might want to rethink the large blades.
Super User scaleface Posted December 29, 2021 Super User Share Posted December 29, 2021 I dont think painting the heads makes a lot of difference . I used a lot with unpainted heads .Lately I've been painting my baits with fingernail polish from the Dollar Tree . They have a gold flake that I like the looks of . I like a 1/2 ounce lure best . It cast better and more accurately with the rod I use . My favorite blades are a little on the small size but they work well post spawn through fall . A 4.5 main leaf willow with a 2 Colorado .
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted December 29, 2021 Super User Share Posted December 29, 2021 Looks great man! Reminds me, I'm gotta get rid of a bunch of spinnerbait heads/frames, blades etc. I should probably spend the day inventorying and give them to one of our young anglers.

I am dabbling with 1/2 ounce baits with unique blade styles to see if that unlocks the heavy bait curse. My strike ratio is just so much higher with the lighter baits that it borders on not making sense. 9 minutes ago, scaleface said: I dont think painting the heads makes a lot of difference . Thanks for the sizing info, I may not need to get many bigger blades. The only ones might be the wide willows. A size 4 wide willow is much shorter than a standard size 4 willow. Going to try a size 2 and 4 wide willow combo. Guessing the wide willows run shorter due to the wider width.

I’m tying bucktail jigs and use clear nail polish to finish the wrap. I went to Walgreens and had the same thing happen to me. The look is even more comical when your 55 y/o buying nail polish. ? I’m not exactly classified as “fricken charming” these days. 2
Super User Cgolf Posted December 29, 2021 Author Super User Share Posted December 29, 2021 I have always gotten a look too, but have a good supply of colors in the sally hanson hard as nails. From my fly tying days I remember this being the prefered brand. oddly with my fly tying and jig tying I have just been doing two whip finishes and not cementing them at all. 1

Super User Cgolf Posted December 30, 2021 Author Super User Share Posted December 30, 2021 Alright and number 2 is done. Yes it is one of those war eagle easy skirts, but that color has been very good to me. While I realize the size 4 wide willow probably has similar surface area to a standard size 4 willow, I outdoor like to try one with a size 5 or 6 trail wide willow to get more length out of the trail blade.

If you turn the swivel around it will spin easier. Allen

In fact, the orientation seems to be inline with how manufacturers are marketing spinnerbaits these days. If my eyes are seeing his pic correctly, he has the rotating post attached to the blade and the fixed housing attached to the wire. I believe that with the orientation he has his swivel installed minimizes chances of debris collecting inside the rotating post of the swivel. This is just my opinions and observations. I know of no known manufacturing R&D on swivels, recommended installation, etc.
