Getting ready to make a point of getting better at drop shot. I am torn between mono and fluorocarbon and what pound test for spinning gear.  I've read ..... use the smallest diameter line possible and also.... use what you would normally use. 

 

So.....What is your drop shot line of choice and why?

It really depends.  If I'm dropshotting relatively open water...maybe light vegetation...I like 8lb fluoro.   Heavier grass....maybe small brush...I like braid to 10# fluoro leader.  I have dropshot pads with 40#braid or 17#fluoro.  Brush piles typically get 12# fluro.  

You can dropshot laydowns with 8# fluoro....and it can be a lot of fun, but expect to lose some fish.

The lakes I fish the water is clear and 99% of the drop shot anglers use between 6 to 8 lb FC or 5 lb to 8 lb mono/coploymer line. Soft plastics range from 3” to 6”, hooks from size 4 to 1/0 depending of the soft plastic size. Drop shot weight from 1/16 to 3/8 depending on depth, soft plastic size and wind.

6# Tatsu.  It lasts forever, works better than most other lines, and it's product I trust.

That's what I was thinking of using but one of the guys I usual fish against swears by mono for DS and he loves Tatsu. I haven't been able to pin him down as to a reason why he uses mono but he kills it on DS all year round. 

 

Sort of tired of him kicking my butt at this technique.  So I decided to start with my line choice and go from there.  I might try both but wanted to see what others are using. 

I couldn't decide between 6 or 8 pound fluorocarbon for the longest time. Finally found 7 lb Sniper. Seems to be the perfect compromise - lol

I don't think mono vs. fluoro is why he kicks your butt, but I would say I have a better time detecting bites using fluoro.  Remember, I have been using a drop shot rig since before it was called that.  6# Tatsu gets the job done:

You are probably correct.  The guy in question is older than dirt and has lived on this lake since the water was pored. I am trying to get through the line issue first,  then move on to technique,  followed by seasonal location. So basically,  I need to follow him around lake and learn.

I think he uses an NRX and an older Shimano Stella.  He is a gear junkie before there was such a thing. He will fish stuff from 40+ ago and then have the latest and greatest on his boat as well.  

I used to fish 8 flouro on the spool.  I hate line twist.  I moved to braid on the spool and a flouro leader.  The clearer the water, the longer the leader.  I’m very happy with this set up and line twist is no longer an issue.

I use both FC and mono, water clarity dictates which one I use.

This is my reasoning - 10# 832 to 6# InvizX leader.
