Bomber…….thing of the past? Bass fishing?

Featured Replies

I throw them on a regular basis. My favorites being the Fat Free Shad and the Model A. I will admit that I haven't purchased one in years, I just switch out the hooks to Tripple Grips and keep chucking them.

If I had to choose between one hard bait to fish for any fresh water sport fish in the US. It would be a toss up between, a Bomber Model A  original Storm Wiggle Wart, or a floating Rapala.  Cast, or trolled, Bass, Salmon, Trout, or Walley, I would be confident fishing one of these and nothing else.  I fish a Bomber 7A almost every time I go bass fishing, and probably should fish it more.

When I sold nearly all my tackle kept 2 Bomber 7A custom ghost painted  simply because they catch bass year around anywhere in SoCal. I can cast the 7A using my MJ Splash-It rod along with MJ Zoner Hunter, LC Pointer SP’s and Balsa Sammie, Michaels  that make up my small hard bait box.

A great bait they are. From the 70’s to this day would rank it equal to the Rapalas I fish. It has been one heck of a producer on the river for Smallies. By what I’m seeing out there the duplicates I’d like to have on a few patterns are done and long gone. Present patterns are not what I’m after. How effective they are I’m not questioning or doubting that. Unless I don’t know how to navigate Cabela’s website. In a “A” Series they carry only (4) patterns. Something new, never been out. Again not questioning the effectiveness. I have seen some being clearanced off. At a few site. Not sure what that means. I’ll post a pic of some great river Smallie patterns. There will be many guys have never seen.

Bomber made several types of very successful lures during time period they were an independent lure mfr.

The original “Bomber” from which the company got it’s name looked like a bomb. This lure was a deep diver made of wood with a metal diving bill that had a very tight wiggle compared to deep diving plugs of that time period.

The old original wooden Bomber still catches bass today. The mass produced plastic modeled model doesn’t have that fish catching action.

Bomber also made a spinnerbait called Bush Wacker, a twin spin type. The Bomber Slab Spoon a structure spoon that still popular. The Bomber A series came out in the 70’s, 6A and 7A. Medium divers are still popular and catch. The Long A is still made today and remains successful.

So when you ask is the Bomber a thing of past, which Bomber?

*I have a few of the Bomber Long A twitch baits with the reflective foil inside - as far as surface twitch baits or straight reeling sub surface they are still good in their category .

Every so often, I fish with someone who starts with "I can't believe you are still fishing those, have you tried this and that with the blah, blah blah system..." Later on in the day it goes like "can I try one of those Long As?..."

Love me some model A's.  Cabelas has the A's for $3.99 right now....let me recommend the model 4a (2 1/8"-5/16oz)...it's a highly underrated crank that compares to the bandit 200.
