Footwear for a kayak

Featured Replies

Looking for another option for footwear for one who has to step in the water before and after each trip. I primarily fish from a canoe and I'm guessing those who kayak are the same where you at least step in the water getting in and out of the boat most of the time. I currently use a cheap pair of rubber boots that have got to go. There's nothing quite like wearing rubber bots all day in the 90 degree sun. Some of the put ins have a muck bottom so something like flip flops won't cut it.

I like to make people uncomfortable. I know Crocs make people squirm enough, so I try to go all out.

I got these for wearing in the canoe - I'll still wear them in the F-9 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NPFZY8K/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1&psc=1

If I ever lost my mind and decided to fish from one of those things, diving booties or neoprene wading shoes is what I would use...

I have a few different kinds that are all good IMHO,  NRS Boundary boots when its cold/cooler and when its hot Softscience. The Softscience are crazy light, comfy and drain well. https://www.ebay.com/itm/384885648440?hash=item599cf8ec38:g:xzEAAOSwbzBifUkK. Hank Parker was a big fan of Softscience as well.

I bought some cheap water shoes on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MLYVJ4F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They are like walking in your bare feet if your bare feet had a bit more grip. I wear them getting in and out of my kayak, and they are also comfortable when pedaling. Even if they last only one season, at only $27 they are a steal.

Do water shoes have enough sole to walk on trap rock? The state uses it here and there.

Keen water shoes, wear them in the bass boat as well.

They are kind of expensive but i like crosskix, similar but better than crocs. I like the 2.0 better than the apx for ease of putting them on. I need a new pair and so will look around for options. Nrs makes great paddle shoes too.

I wear the Keens as well, they're comfortable a all heck and have enough sole foe any kind of rocky put ins around here.

I have the keens and a pair of astrals and I always go back to the boundaries simply because my feet stay dry. If conditions are perfect and my feet don’t stay wet for 8 hours I’ll wear the shoes. I can’t stand blisters or my feet feeling destroyed from being soaked all day.

I just wear crocs

I like the look of the Croc's, but if they are like my old Teva's were, the leather is going to stay wet for a good while, I'd prefer something that dries quickly.

The water shoes I linked to have a thin sole, so it's like walking in bare feet with a rubberized bottom. Where I primarily launch I have to step on large, slimy rocks. They grip just fine, but the feel is af you are in your bare feet.

One other thing - they are extremely light. I usually only wear them in and out of the water, but once I drove home with them on. It made braking feel a lot different. They reminded me of my old Simpson racing shoes.

Unless you are getting out and wading, I see no need for shoes in a kayak. I see top level tournament kayak anglers pedaling barefoot all the time

the profit margin on bare feet is not big though, so spend some cheddar!!!

I fish multiple times a week, every week, all year round. I fish the salt 3-5 times a year as well as my native TN waters. I’m 36 and have had two pre-cancerous spots removed from my back.

Starting about 3 years ago I began to wear full sun protection including shoes. When Matt Allen came out with his cancer spot removal from his face it made me glad. More people need to understand the straight destruction the sun plays with our bodies.

I totally agree a pair of old sketchers or crocs does the job but I prefer being comfortable those 15-20 hours I’m on the water each week.

Sunscreen works too

Covering my entire body exposed to the sun with sunscreen every two hours is tedious and I’m going to miss spots.

Saying “Sunscreen works” is like saying brakes work on cars so who needs to worry about seatbelts. Yes, I know it’s a bit extreme but all of us spend a lot of time in the sun. I want everyone who enjoys fishing to be able to do so for their entire lives.

I hound my fishing club members, my friends and anyone willing to listen. Save your skin and get more years of catching big ones.
