Old Ambassadeur

Featured Replies

To all of you guys bragging about your Revos, you must have nothing to compare them to, try a Lew's or better yet an old Ambassadeur with just 2 bearings, if they have more there is something wrong. I take that back I have a black Max that has been it may be the last good reel by Garcia, it is still an Ambassadeur, which is, by the way the correct spelling. I have 3 of the old ones and one Revo S which was given to me. Got it for all it was worth. I have a 5000, 5000C, and a 5500C, all 40 to 50 years old and just as smooth casting and reeling as when they were new. Ever listen to the gears grond on fishing tv shows when trying to land a two pound bass, won't happen with these reels!!

I still use my 5500C I bought when I was a kid.

Fantastic reel. I would argue one of the best that was ever made....and mine are collecting dust.

I have NLW CT tournament reels built into 5500 surf-lure and 6500 surf-bait braid reels.

And LW 4600C and 1500C built into braid-raced close-fishing reels.

100% backlash proof with extreme weight range.

The round Ambassador reels were some of the best casting reels ever made. They were smooth, tough as nails and anyone could take them apart and put them back together.   To prove my point, look at this photo.  I have posted it before, so if you have seen it I'm sorry for the repeat.  I landed this 120 pound Pacific sailfish with 8 pound Ande mono using an Ambassador 6500C.    I've landed snook up to 30 pounds on this same reel.  Try this with a modern bass reel and see what happens...

The only issue with these old reels is weight.  Modern reels are much lighter.  Modern reels also have all kinds of gadgets to keep people who don't or can't learn to cast from getting backlashes. I don't use my Ambassador reels these days, but I still have a lot of respect for them.

As a certifiable old coot, all of my casting reels are round Ambassadeurs. I have 6 in regular use and a couple dozen more that are either retired or backups.

Sure, they're heavier than most bass reels, and none of them have double-digit bearing counts or supersonic retrieve speed, but they just work. And keep on working for years with some simple maintenance.

That was very Karen esque

I've owned a few old 500 and 5500's. They're great for casting 1/2 oz-plus baits and taking half a day for one retrieve. That was no big deal when all reels were 4.7:1 retrieve.
