Why do bait companies make frog legs so long?

Featured Replies

Seems like everyone recommends trimming the legs on your frog to avoid short strikes, as well as help the frog walk better. So why do so many bait companies continue to make frogs with such long legs? Is there some advantage that no one is talking about there?

Actual frog legs are fairly long, so I'd guess just trying to make it look more like the real thing.

Maybe the bodies are just too short.

I’m glad they do…simple and easy to customize.  Many will cut the legs on one side slightly shorter to help it walk better.

i think this is the true answer.  they are allowing us options.  cut it or dont cut it however you want.  if a bass bites, it's because of your perfect well thougth out trimming.  if the bait sucks, mmmm..maybe i cut them too short?  or not enough.   i trim them so i dont slam the legs in the lid.  :)  my frog game is not strong.

Easy to trim. Not so easy to add length to the legs.

I used to trim them.  I don't anymore.  It didn't make any difference.  I think we like to trick ourselves into thinking we've influenced something.

But, if they're on a short right leg pattern, you're skunked.

Its kind of like getting a haircut.  You can always take a little more off the top, but you can't put any back on. :frog-13:

If I'm understanding him correctly, he means someone should just produce frogs like this.... Since so many people bend the hooks out anyway.

I wouldn't buy one if the hooks were sticking out like that.

Talk about snag city...

If someone wants them bent out - they can do that  themselves....nice, tucked close hooks are best for frogs.

Scissors and pliers should take care of all the frog problems. ?

Or just use a softer bodied frog like a Scum Frog and leave it alone

I found that cutting off some of the legs helped. That said I catch way more fish on horny toads than other frogs.
