I've never had much luck with spinners. Unless we're talking in-line spinners, in which case I've caught tons of smallies on them. But then again, I bank fish small rivers and ponds mostly. Lots of tight areas with little casting room, let alone room get a good long cast and retrieve. 

 

But in my very limited experience, smallmouth love to chase shiny things. And spinners, spoons, and the like all seem likely to attract their attention. 

Funny you ask this, my son and I went and waded 4+ miles of creek yesterday. When I say creek, I mean creek. The deepest water was almost waist deep with great clarity. Between us, we caught almost 100 fish, 90% smallies. I started with a Plopper 90 before sunrise, switching to a Giant Dog X and had some of the most vicious hits. On the way back down, I put on a Gan Craft Killers Bait Mini, 1/4oz spinnerbait, chartreuse and white with a Keitech 3.3 blue/chartreuse SI Fat trailer. They were crushing the spinnerbait and, like mentioned above, if I can't use the topwater, spinnerbait fishing is acceptable.

Super clear, almost crystal clear.

My favorite moving bait for smallies. The one in my profile picture was caught on a 3/4 oz white and chartreuse Screamin Eagle. That's pretty much the only spinnerbait I throw these days. I like them because the thin diameter wire and small blades (relatively speaking, compared to other SB's) make them easy to burn.

I dont really need alot of space for long casts with spinnerbaits. In the stream, i regularly pitch it around cover and work parallel to the bank (deadly). I dont know how many ive pulled out on a spinner within 10ft of me.

3/4 oz with a single #5 willow was absolutely deadly for me during prespawn to spawn transion.

I don't think I've ever tried a single willow! I haven't seen any in tackle shops around me either

I call this "sniper style" and do it too.  I use a really short rod for it - 6-2.  Can be deadly.

I love catching smallies spinnerbaits!  They try to rip the rod from your hands!

Absolutely. I like darker colors with gold blades. In the River my go to size is 3/8 ounce. I use White if there feeding on shad. They blast it 

I got away from spinner baits because they seemed like too much work, but clearly it's something I have to get back to.

Yeah they will take a beating. Until a 10 lb channel smacks it, that’ll put a kink in it lol.

That Megabass SV3 is my go-to spinnerbait. The white viper color with some nail polish on the blades for cloudy days, the hiyu for clear and sunny, and the ayu with some chartruese nail polish on the small willow for slightly dingy water.

Absolutely! When the spinnerbait bite is on, I get as many smallies as largies. The largest bass I ever caught was a smallie on a spinnerbait, and I've gotten a few nice ones on the same lake on a spinnerbait as well.
