What makes a good buzz bait rod and reel

Featured Replies

Also what buzz baits do you like? Seems like most buzz baits without skirts have huge keepers for a guy’s choice of a trailer?

I use a MH/MF 7'6" baitcaster paired with a 7.1 ratio reel.  I use 40lb. Suffix braid and that bit of extra give in the tip section helps with hookups.  MegaStrike Cavitron Black/Black (1/2oz.) and a War Eagle, same weight Chart/White are my best producers, but I also like an in-line like D&M offers.

The best buzzbait rod is the one that you can cast the buzzbait that works on your water as accurately as possible and has enough backbone to set the hook. For me, that’s a MF/MH normally for throwing 3/8 oz baits into medium cover. I fish a swinging sugar buzz exclusively.

I use the ever  versatile 7 foot mh .

Me too.  I have a zillion 10 that makes it easy to keep my buzzbait up and movin'.

Thanks for the input

I'm currently using a 6'10" MHMF Lews Hack Attack spinnerbait/buzzbait rod with a Daiwa CT Type R 7.3:1 reel loaded with 15lb Big Game mono.

I use a variety of buzzbaits, but lately it has been SK Sugarbuzz or Skipn Buzz

iRod Genesis III Swim and Vibrating jig rod 7'2" MH MF is my favorite for buzzbaits. It's the first iRod I bought and since then I have to say it seems to fish a little clumsier than other rods for some reason.

But I like it very much for buzzbaits and used it for spinnerbaits for a long time because of its excellent hookup ratio. The blank seems to be perfect for buzzbaits and spinnerbaits. I throw it on a slower reel than most Abu REVO Winch 5:4:1. Use Nichols, Cavitron, and Lunker Lure buzzbaits

For the last 2 years I've been testing more forgiving rods for buzzbaits ( because I prefer braid ).

The best rod SO FAR for me is the G.LOOMIS IMX-PRO 845C CBR

I rarely lose fish now, if so it's my own fault ie, not paying attention or knowingly setting the hook to fast.

Another cheaper option but with same properties is the GCX version of the same rod

I've used everything from a $500 rod and a $500 reel to a $40 rod with a $40 reel.  I like a stiffer MH or a H rod with a moderate or mod fast action and a reel with an alumimum frame and and spool diameter and gear ratio that let me easily keep a buzzbait on top.

Welcome to the forum.  :hello: Lots of knowledge available here.  Be sure to look at some of the articles and gear reviews.  Who knows...maybe the Bait Monkey will give you a visit.  :teeth:

3 years old but I'll chime in anyway. I like the Buckeye Gbuzz (Gerald Swindle model), I used to get them under $5 but I see they're now $7.50, it comes naked, I like it with the big bite baits toad. For Rod nothing too fancy needed, I use a 73mhf or a 73hmhf kistler helium, slings it a mile, gets it on top fast, technique and timing helps with that too. The reel is a tatula 100, good capacity as I like thick line for this.

I've gone to a shorter and stouter rod than I did back in the day.  I use a 7ft heavy KLX .

As to buzzbaits , The Brazalo bushwacker that's made down in Arkansas is really good and  that's coming from a guy who says a buzz bait is a buzz bait,

I personally like the OG head but he has other options.
