Curado K Thumb Bar

Featured Replies

I have a few months old Curado K.  The thumb bar does not want to fully to engage when you start reeling in after a cast.  It is an intermittent problem.  At times it works fine but at other times the thumb bar only come up half way.  I thought I would look for a simple fix before I spend the money to send it in as in it no longer under warranty.  I did try to lubricate it but it has not made a difference.

Send it in to Shimano, I think they will take care of it for you.

If you're comfortable opening her up then go for it. Might just be the clutch pawl assembly coming off the guide in the frame and all you have to do is pop it back in.

What did you try to lubricate? Details? Pics?

This would be my guess as well.  If you take it apart, look to see if the paw is bent outward. If so, it made need to be replaced but you may also be able bend it enough that it doesn't pop out.

Does it sound like this?

Chronic problem in the K-series. As I said befor, the K-series and somewhat the, I-series is where Shimano stopped seriously worrying about quality and started relying on its name alone.

Over your reel, the problem is the low quality of the disengaging system spring.

Yup. 3 in my orbit had this issue including my own. All were from the earliest run circa late 2017. All were addressed. BTW, the kick lever and its grease trough had nothing to do with it. This section is pretty foolproof on the K. The return springs were fine too.

What was the issue?

I would totally agree on the K series as the thumb bar kept separating on lots of them and the dials on them were super stiff. However, the I series of curados are/were amazing. I haven't upgraded my 200i because I think the new stuff isn't better?? but I could be wrong.

I like the build on the I better but honestly after just a couple of outings with a Curado G its so much better IMO. Sure its heavier, but for me its way easier to dial in and the construction overall just feels higher quality.

Yeah idk why i said G its a Curado D series. Your comment struck me as odd as it was highly praised in tackletours review.

I thought I would give an update.  I sent this reel into Shimano and after 6 weeks it was returned.  They took it apart and even gave me a call.  Unfortunately they could not find anything wrong and they sent it back.  They said if it acts up again to send a video and send it back.  I have no doubt that this reel will malfunction again.

It could be just under-lubed or dirty inside. In that case, it may become normal again if they cleaned and re-lubed it.

Has anyone had similar issues with the newer Curado 150 MGL?

This might sound obvious, but . If after the cast your thumb. Or any part of your hand is putting any pressure on the thumb bar by accident. You’ll feel and hear a terrible clicking. Currado k was my first casting reel. I did that a few times when I first started out. No problems since, with any of the currados

Quite well-known problem on the K series. Cheap springs in the thumb bar disengaging system.

Really? Cura K (Krap) is well-known for it's thumb bar issues.
